Strade Bianche 2026: Pogačar’s Pursuit of History and the Evolution of Italy’s White Roads

Heroism and an unwavering love for the sport permeate Strade Bianche. The Tuscan sterrati (white gravel roads) provide this Italian race its unique character, captivating many cycling fans – even the greatest riders in the world. While often considered the sixth Monument, the 2026 edition marks only the twentieth running of this increasingly prestigious classic. World Champion Tadej Pogačar aims for a fourth victory in five years.

A Race Rooted in History

For many cycling enthusiasts, Strade Bianche rivals the Monument races in popularity. In a short period, this Italian gravel classic has gained immense fame, arguably sparking the gravel revolution of the last decade. Numerous races have attempted to replicate the success of the Italian sterrati, but none have matched its beauty.

Recap of the 2025 Edition

The 2025 race saw challenging conditions, with white and treacherous roads testing the riders. Early attacks came from riders like Pepijn Reinderink, but all eyes were on Tadej Pogačar, seeking his third win. Tom Pidcock initially broke away, but a crash by Pogačar in a descent dramatically altered the race. Despite the incident, Pogačar quickly rejoined Pidcock, leading to a tense finale. Pogačar launched a decisive attack on the Colle Pinzuto, securing a solo victory. Pidcock finished second and Tim Wellens completed the podium for UAE Emirates.

Course Changes for 2026

The 2026 edition features a modified course, with sixteen kilometers of gravel sections removed, shortening the race by twelve kilometers to a total of 201 kilometers. The challenging finale remains unchanged, prompting speculation whether the organizers are attempting to counter Pogačar’s dominance and open the race to riders like Mathieu van der Poel.

The removed sections include La Piana (6.4 km) and Seravalle (9.3 km), previously featured in the early stages of the race. The first gravel section of the day, Vidritta, has also been halved from 4.4 km to 2.4 km. The race will now feature 64.1 kilometers of gravel roads.

The final kilometers remain unchanged, including the challenging gravel sections of San Martino in Grania, Monte Sante Marie, Monteaperti, Colle Pinzuto, Le Tolfe, Strada del Castagno, and Montechiaro. The race culminates in a steep climb to the Piazza del Campo in Siena.

Key Contenders

The 2026 race boasts a strong field of competitors. Tadej Pogačar is the clear favorite, having demonstrated his dominance in previous editions. Tom Pidcock, with a consistent track record in Strade Bianche, is also a strong contender. Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas, emerging talents from UAE Emirates, are also expected to challenge. Other riders to watch include Romain Grégoire, Matteo Jorgenson, and Jan Christen.
