Tanjung Priok Tollway Robbery: Man Beaten While Stranded in Traffic, Wife Attacked

A disturbing incident occurred on the Tanjung Priok Access Tollway (Jalan Tol Akses Tanjung Priok) in Jakarta Utara, where a man sustained severe injuries during a brazen daytime robbery while he and his wife were trapped in traffic.

The victim, a 52-year-old man identified by his initials IBA, was caught off guard when a group of six assailants wielding sharp weapons surrounded his car at around 4 PM on Friday, January 3. The attackers, who had been lying in wait, pounced on the unsuspecting couple as they sat helplessly in the congested traffic at Km 13 of the toll road.

"Upon arriving at the scene, the victim found themselves trapped in traffic, and that’s when the six assailants carrying sharp weapons suddenly approached their car from the side and began attacking my client’s wife," stated Chief Inspector Ade Ary Syam Indradi, Head of Public Relations for the Metropolitan Jakarta Police.

The armed gang attempted to rob the couple, making off with the victim’s phone. In the commotion, the man suffered lacerations on his right index finger, while his wife sustained more severe injuries. The total damage is estimated to be around IDR 1.5 million.

The authorities were promptly alerted, and North Jakarta Metro Police are currently investigating the case. Police advise drivers to remain vigilant, especially during congestion, and to keep their car windows closed to prevent such incidents.

As the couple continues to recover from their harrowing ordeal, Jakarta residents are urged to stay safe and cautious on the roads. For the latest updates on traffic and safety measures, visit our website regularly.
