Dealership Responsiveness Soars, But AI Introduces New Challenges
For the fourth consecutive year, auto dealerships are getting faster at responding to online leads. A recent study by Pied Piper revealed a record-high Internet Lead Effectiveness score of 71 out of 100 for franchise dealerships, a six-point jump from the previous year. Infiniti led the way with a score of 82.
The Rise of Multichannel Communication
The improvement is largely driven by increased proactive outreach through multiple channels. Dealers are now more likely to respond via email, text message, and phone. In fact, 51% of dealerships now provide a “perfect response” – answering a customer’s question through multiple paths within 15 minutes, double the rate from five years ago. Text messaging is becoming increasingly popular, used in 54% of responses, up from 38% in 2025. Phone calls also increased, from 66% to 75%.
AI’s Double-Edged Sword: Automation and the “Digital Handoff”
Artificial intelligence is playing a significant role, automating responses to simple inquiries. However, the study highlights a growing risk: “digital handoff.” This occurs when systems fail to communicate effectively – between a dealership’s DMS, website, CRM, AI tools, and communication platforms – or when AI encounters complex inquiries and human staff aren’t prepared to take over.
The study found that inquiries requiring human help scored nine points lower on average, and customers were twice as likely to receive no personal response. CRM dashboards may display activity even when the customer experience has failed.
The Hidden Costs of Automation
Pied Piper vice president of metrics and analytics, Cameron O’Hagan, emphasized that while automation improves responsiveness, the greatest risk lies in the handoffs. Teams often assume automation is working and that someone will intervene if it fails, but too often, no one does. Independent measurement is crucial to identify these hidden breakdowns.
The New Frontier: AI-Powered Search and ChatGPT Visibility
Dealerships now face a new challenge: visibility on AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT. Pied Piper added a new measurement to its study, simulating customer inquiries through ChatGPT. The results revealed “clear visibility gaps.”
ChatGPT listed the target dealership first 77% of the time. However, in 14% of cases, it wasn’t the first listing, and in 9% of searches, the dealership wasn’t mentioned at all, despite being the closest dealer with the requested vehicle in stock. ChatGPT confirmed vehicle inventory 70% of the time, but test drive availability only 36% of the time, and only 30% of responses included a direct link to the vehicle on the dealership’s website.
Structuring Data for AI Discovery
These findings illustrate that even well-stocked dealerships can be “digitally invisible” if their information isn’t structured for AI discovery.
What This Means for Dealers
The data suggests that dealerships must prioritize not only speed of response but also the seamless integration of AI and human interaction. Investing in robust data management and ensuring staff are prepared to handle complex inquiries are critical. Optimizing online presence for AI-powered search is becoming increasingly critical.
