There are suspicions of multiple criminal offenses in the telemarketing company Windmill. VG reported in May that a Slovakian party leader had sent at least 90 million Norwegian kroner into the company, which was based in Jessheim. The money came from Dubai, Eastern Europe, and tropical tax havens, with some of it used to buy luxury villas on the French Riviera, raising questions about money laundering. Both the company’s management and the Slovakian party leader deny any wrongdoing.
Windmill had hundreds of employees and an annual turnover of between 100 and 200 million kroner, spread across several limited liability companies. All the companies are now bankrupt or dissolved. The company’s management blames the bankruptcy on customer flight following VG’s article. Lawyer Ellen Eilerås, appointed by the court in Romerike to handle several of the bankruptcies, suspects gross economic mismanagement and gross money laundering in the company, as well as violations of the law on unfair business practices and tax and accounting laws. Eilerås says it is likely that she will file a police report.
The Slovakian party leader, Viktor Stromček, became a co-owner of the telemarketing company in 2015. In 2018, he began sending tens of millions of kroner from a company he controlled in Dubai. Some of this money was used to buy a large villa on the French Riviera. Another villa was bought with money from another Slovak, living on the Bahamas, which Stromček also uses. Stromček maintains that VG’s articles about Windmill contain “dozens of fundamental inaccuracies” and that VG is “grossly misrepresenting and twisting facts.”
Over several years, auditors have questioned money transfers in the telemarketing company and demanded documentation, which they did not receive. One auditor refused to sign off on the 2020 accounts and later resigned. In 2022, a new auditor was appointed, who also resigned, partly because she did not receive answers to questions about money transfers that could be traced back to the tax havens of the Seychelles and the British Virgin Islands.
