Sweden is investing over 300 million crowns to purchase the Raptor kamikaze drone from Danish manufacturer Nordic Wing, marking the military’s first large-scale procurement of an armed drone system designed to strike high-value targets deep inside enemy territory.
Sweden Acquires First Armed Drone System
The Swedish Försvarsmakten is incorporating the Raptor system to significantly boost its tactical strike capabilities. According to Nordic Wings-sjef Jonas Münster, the platform features a range of up to 200 kilometers and targets critical infrastructure rather than front-line infantry. “It is not a drone that is supposed to knock out infantry or targets at the front,” Münster stated to Aftonbladet.
Colonel Lennart Widerström, leder for Feltstridsskolen, noted that the letttransporterte (easily transportable) units allow light forces to move rapidly from target detection to engagement. The first units to receive the Raptor will be mobile fighter units that previously lacked organic deep-strike capabilities, according to military officials.
Technological Shifts Along Frontline Combat Zones
The procurement is a direct response to evolving warfare tactics observed in the conflict between Russia and Ukraina. Traditional assets like tanks, artillery, and fighter jets have shared operational space with unmanned systems that now dominate modern battlefields. Along the active frontline, combat operations have generated a roughly ten-kilometer-wide “death zone” where stationary personnel face rapid elimination by hostile drones, according to regional reporting.
To maximize operational flexibility, the Swedish military is also purchasing the Astero reconnaissance drone to operate alongside the Raptor. Münster explained that while both products function independently, pairing them creates a unified capability that enhances overall tactical performance.

Danish manufacturer Nordic Wing was founded in 2018 by fixed-wing drone industry professionals and specializes in advanced unmanned aerial technology.
Broader Nordic Defense Strategies
Neighboring countries are similarly modernizing their force structures around unmanned technology. Norway’s Forsvaret has integrated drones into core defense strategy, backed by a dedicated defense sector drone strategy and a 1.5 billion crown land-drone program spanning ten years. The initiative aims to field Norwegian-developed drone swarms and improve air defense countermeasures, operating in close cooperation with Nato allies.
