Ambon Police Officer Dies After Brutal Beating of Golkar DPRD Maluku Member’s Driver

AMBON, Indonesia — A police officer from the Ambon Port Area Police Station (Polsek Kawasan Pelabuhan Yos Sudarso Ambon – KPYS) has died after allegedly assaulting a driver belonging to a Golkar DPRD Maluku member. The officer, identified as Bripka Edy Wally, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Maluku.
Edy Wally was initially hospitalized after being examined by the Professional Ethics Commission (Propam) following the incident at the Yos Sudarso Port a few days earlier. He complained of chest pain to his colleague, Aipda Tortet, and was subsequently rushed to the hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at 00:46 WIT.
The incident, which was caught on CCTV, showed Edy Wally violently assaulting Rizal Taufik Serang, a driver for a Golkar DPRD Maluku member, on Sam Ratulangi Street in downtown Ambon. Edy Wally was seen punching and kicking Serang, who was then pulled out of his car and beaten further.
The Ambon City Police Chief (Kapolresta) Kombes Pol Driyano Andry Ibrahim led the officer’s funeral at the Warasia Cemetery in Sirimau Kota Ambon. He expressed his condolences and hoped that Edy Wally’s dedication would serve as an inspiration.
Prior to his death, Edy Wally was being investigated by Propam for his involvement in the assault. The incident has sparked outrage among the public, with many calling for justice and accountability. This is not the first time police brutality has been reported in the region, raising concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officers.
