In a tragic incident, a Swiss snowboarder lost their life in an avalanche while participating in a backcountry event in the Austrian Alps. The avalanche, triggered by spontaneous slab release, occurred on Thursday, sweeping the skier off a 35-degree southeast-facing slope at an elevation of 2,500 meters.
The alarm was raised around midday, with rescue services swiftly dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, rescuers were unable to locate the snowboarder. The search operation was later called off, and the incident is now being investigated by local authorities.
The deceased, a 35-year-old man, had been participating in a group event organized by a local snowboard club. Weather conditions at the time were reported as fair, with light snowfall and moderate winds.
