Identification Efforts Underway
The Valais cantonal police have confirmed the identities of two Swiss women, aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss men, aged 18 and 16. Their bodies have been returned to their families. Cause of the Fire
A preliminary investigation suggests the fire was likely caused by sparklers on champagne bottles being brought too close to the ceiling. Switzerland’s President Guy Parmelin has called the event “one of the worst tragedies” in the country’s history.
While a teenage golfer from Italy has been reported as one of the deceased, Swiss and Italian officials have not yet confirmed this information. Families are being directed to a conference centre outside Crans, where representatives from the Italian Civil Protection team and Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, are assisting with the identification process.
