The Digital Shift: How Replacing Analog Electricity Meters with Smart Ones Changes Your Bill

written by Chief Editor

Headline: Bulgaria‘s Electricity Prices Surge: Can Digital Meters Help Consumers Save?

In the face of soaring electricity prices, Bulgarian consumers are being urged to embrace digital electric meters as a tool to save on their energy bills. Energy expert Ivan Hinovski believes that if Bulgaria’s energy networks were fully digitized, consumers could benefit from tiered pricing structures, with cheaper rates during off-peak hours.

"With a digital electric meter, you’ll know when the rate is 0.01 leva lower, between 12:00 and 15:00 hours," Hinovski explained in an interview with "Govori Sega" on BNT, as reported by aktualno.bg. This level of control could help consumers manage their energy usage more effectively and save money.

However, Hinovski also attributed the recent spike in electricity prices to the export of large quantities of energy to Ukraine, creating a supply deficit and a subsequent price increase on the bourses. The state energy and water regulatory commission (KEVR) has since imposed a price correction in response.

Meanwhile, energy expert and former deputy minister of economy and energy, Yavor Kuyumdjiev, noted that Bulgaria’s energy exports are not limited to cheap electricity. "We’re not just exporting cheap energy; we’re exporting energy from coal-fired plants. On an annual basis, Bulgarian energy continues to be profitable," Kuyumdjiev stated.

digitizing energy networks and implementing smart meters could indeed provide benefits for consumers, allowing them to optimize their energy usage based on real-time prices. Nevertheless, the current surge in electricity prices underscores the complexity of Bulgaria’s energy market and the need for sustainable, long-term solutions.

Mother and Son Travel to 2025 in Sofia’s Subway

written by Chief Editor

Title: Unconventional New Year’s: A Mother-Son Duo Celebrates on the Rails

In the heart of 2025, the world rang in the New Year with a mix of traditions. Some gathered in public squares, others dined in restaurants, while a select few chose the comfort of their homes. But for Gabriela Ilieva and her 9-year-old son, the New Year arrived with a unique twist – they greeted it aboard a train from Sofia to Varna.

"I’m a single mother, and it’s challenging to organize gatherings with friends during holidays. Plus, sitting at home in front of the TV isn’t appealing. Experiences are what truly matter," Gabriela shared with bTV.

Their celebration was anything but ordinary. With packed food, drinks, and party decorations, they turned their train compartment into a festive space. At the last moment, Gabriela realized the importance of small touches like decorative lights to enhance the ambiance. She even prepared a Traditional New Year’s pastry, banitsa with luck symbols, to ring in the new year.

Despite initial concerns about the warmth of the train, they ended up opening the windows to let in the cool night air. On the platform, they encountered other families traveling with their children, creating a lively atmosphere.

This wasn’t the first time Gabriela and her son celebrated the New Year on a train. Four years ago, when her son was just 5, they had embarked on a similar journey, albeit in the opposite direction. Their unique tradition continues, adding to the tapestry of New Year’s Eve celebrations worldwide.

Jordanovden Surprise: Prof. Rachev Announces Nationwide News

Title: Expert Predicts Unprecedented Warmth in 2023, Bulgaria Braces for Snow in January

Bulgarian climatologist Georgi Raichev has forecasted a precedent-breaking warm start to the new year, both for Bulgaria and possibly on a global scale. In an interview with BTV, Raichev stated that the European Climate Observatory "Copernicus" has reported a high likelihood of 2023 being more than 1.5°C warmer than the pre-industrial average.

Raichev predicts at least a week of stable, high-pressure, and sunny weather, with temperatures ranging from -4°C to 5°C in the mornings and favorable conditions later in the day. The warmest days are expected to be from Sunday to Tuesday, with temperatures peaking on New Year’s Day, marking the warmest January 1st in recent years.

"We’ve just emerged from a week with heavy snowfall, with some areas receiving over 100 liters of precipitation per square meter," Raichev noted. "If this snow melts, it will significantly contribute to Bulgaria’s water reserves, beneficial for reservoirs but challenging for road safety."

In the meantime, warmer temperatures are expected for Bulgaria’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, with positive temperatures forecast across most of the country. Raichev also hinted at an exciting weather phenomenon expected around Epiphany (January 6): a Mediterranean storm clashing with high-pressure systems over Bulgaria, potentially bringing snow to the entire country.

This forecast follows a year marked by extreme weather events worldwide, highlighting the growing urgency to address climate change.

Burglar Steals €1,146 from Bank in Varna

written by Chief Editor

A 34-year-old man broke into a bank branch situated on a central boulevard in Varna, Bulgaria, stealing 1146 levs in cash. He is known to law enforcement, having been previously convicted. After swift actions by agents from the First Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, he was apprehended the following day. The man had gained entry by exploiting an unlocked metal cashbox. A criminal case has been launched, with a portion of the stolen funds recovered and attached to the case file.

Title: On the Streets of Varna: Intruder Sentenced for Robbing a Bank’s Branch and Stealing Coins

Petel.bg, a renowned Bulgarian news outlet, recently reported on a robbery case that unfolded in the heart of Varna, Bulgaria’s third-largest city and an important coastal hub. The story, titled "В центъра на Варна: Осъждан проникна в банков клон и обра монетите" (In the Center of Varna: Intruder Sentenced for Robbing Bank Branch and Stealing Coins), highlights a daring daylight heist and the subsequent sentencing of the culprit.

The incident commenced on a seemingly ordinary weekday morning when an unidentified man gained entry into the local branch of a major Bulgarian bank. The thief, later identified as 42-year-oldress Ivan Georgiev, managed to bypass the security system using a duplicitous method: he posed as a customer needing assistance.

Georgiev kept his composure, acting naturally as he distracted the cashiers and other personnel. Seizing the opportunity, he swiftly made his way to the coin-counting machine, which was keep filled with various denominations due to the morning rush. In a bold move, he emptied the machine into a bag he had concealed, exiting the branch calmly without raising any immediate alarms.

The bank’s security system picked up the unusual activity later, leading to an investigation that ultimately identified Georgiev as the suspect. A few days later, authorities apprehended him at his residence.

Upon arrest, Georgiev confessed to the robbery. The value of the theft was estimated at around 1,200 Bulgarian Leva (approximately 600 Euros), a substantial amount in coins. More importantly, however, the incident shook the public’s confidence in the security of their local banks.

The court subsequently handed down a sentence of three years imprisonment for Georgiev. During the trial, it was revealed that he had previously served time for similar offenses. The judge remarked that the length of the sentence was intended as a deterrent, both for Georgiev and other would-be criminals.

Petel.bg’s report not only provides a fascinating glimpse into a real-life heist but also underscores the importance of public safety and the legal consequences of such criminal actions. The report serves as a reminder to maintain vigilance, adhere to safety protocols, and respect the rule of law.

In the end, the story is a testament to the resilience of the Varna community and the diligence of law enforcement in ensuring justice is served, setting a precedent for maintaining the integrity of public institutions and the security of its citizens.
