After the Stifling Wednesday: Thousands Travel on Green Tickets, Await Refunds

by Chief Editor January 10, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Headline: Sofia Implements Green Ticket to Curb Winter Smog; Nearly 40,000 Passengers Adopt Public Transport

In a bid to mitigate Sofia’s notorious winter smog issue, the city implemented a green ticket on Thursday, January 7, when harmful PM10 particles were within normal limits. The move, which was preventive and extended into Friday, encouraged residents to opt for public transport instead of driving. Around 40,000 passengers bought green tickets by 12 PM on Thursday.

The green ticket, costing an additional 0.60 BGN (around 0.32 EUR) to the regular fare of 1.60 BGN, was aimed at reducing traffic congestion and lowering pollution levels. However, many passengers found themselves paying the regular fare with their cards, despite the green ticket being in effect. The city’s Center for Urban Mobility clarified that existing 30+ or 60+ tickets would not be converted automatically to green tickets; passengers needed to purchase them separately.

Citizens and experts alike queried why the green ticket wasn’t introduced earlier, during the thick smog on Wednesday. According to updated rules, the green ticket is enforced when PM10 levels reach or are forecasted to exceed 100 μg/m³, measured at two stations. On January 7, stations in "Надежда," "Дружба," "Хиподрума," "Павлово," "Младост," and on "Париж" Street all exceeded this threshold, indicating that a green ticket should have been implemented on Thursday as well.

From January 7 onwards, mechanical street cleaning with heavy-duty public transport vehicles began in several districts, including "Средец," "Оборище," "Връбница," "Младост," "Възраждане," "Красно село," "Искър," and "Изгрев."

Sofia’s struggle with polluted air during winter is well-established, with geographical factors and urban development contributing to the issue. Bearing 55.97% of the blame, residential heating with solid fuels is identified as the primary culprit. To combat this, the city implemented a ban on wood and coal heating in nine districts as of January 1, affecting around 1,600 households. As an alternative, the municipality offers free replacement of old stoves with new, cleaner devices, with nearly 5,000 households expressing interest.

Enforcement of the heating ban is carried out by mobile teams from the Sofia Municipal Inspection and the Municipal Directorate for Emergency Assistance and Prevention. From January 1 to 7, 213 checks were performed, resulting in 70 inspections and 57 acts issued against violators. Additionally, old and polluting vehicles are barred from entering the city center between December 1 and February’s end. Since the implementation of the low-emission zone, the number of violators has halved, with around 2,000 vehicles entering daily, compared to the initial 20,000 detected by traffic cameras.

Bulgarian Musician andArtist Rossen Karamfilov Condemns Maneula‘s Father After Embezzlement Revelation

Rossen Karamfilov, a renowned Bulgarian singer, poet, and artist, has lashed out against Krasimir Gorsov, the father of Maneula, who was severely injured in an accident involving racing driver Maxim Staviski. The outburst follows the recent revelation by TV host Vladislav Vergala that Gorsov embezzled 360,000 Lev (approximately $191,000) from his daughter’s medical fund to gamble, subsequently disappearing without a trace.

"Remember this face," Karamfilov urged in a statement. "This is the face of evil. This is Krasimir Gorsov, the father of Maneula, who was left permanently disabled in the crash with Maxim Staviski. This ‘father’ stole 360,000 Lev from his daughter’s treatment account and vanished without a trace, leaving his shattered daughter to fend for herself, oblivious to whether she would live or die."

Karamfilov, son of late renowned artist Kolyo Karamfilov, expressed his outrage on social media, describing Gorsov as a metaphor for a system that is harming Bulgaria and a embodiment of the country’s gambling addiction. He called for a stand against parental "vultures" and unscrupulous individuals, both in Bulgaria and abroad.

Maneula’s accident with Maxim Staviski, a well-known Bulgarian racing driver, made headlines in 2020. The incident left her with severe injuries, and her family launched a fundraiser for her medical expenses. It was later discovered that Krasimir Gorsov, her father, had embezzled a significant portion of these funds, leaving his daughter’s recovery in jeopardy.

The revelation has sparked outrage among Bulgarians, with many condemning Gorsov’s actions and calling for justice. As the story continues to unfold, Rossen Karamfilov’s statement serves as a powerful rallying cry against corruption and the neglect of vulnerable individuals.

The Panama Canal: A Historic Journey and Trump’s Stance

by Chief Editor January 10, 2025

Title: The Panamal Canal: A Century of History, Tirades, and Tariffs

Article:

In recent weeks, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to seize control of the Panama Canal, drawing a firm response from Panama’s government, which insists that its sovereignty cannot be questioned. To understand the controversy swirling around this strategic waterway, we must delve into its rich history.

The Canal’s Construction: A American Achievement?

Trump frequently boasts that the U.S. built the Panama Canal over a century ago, revolutionizing global maritime trade. Before 1914, ships bound for the Pacific from the Atlantic had to circumnavigate South America, a journey taking months, even with the most advanced vessels of the time. The Panama Canal cut that journey down to a mere eight to ten hours.

Trump claimed recently that between 35,000 and 38,000 Americans died during the canal’s construction from 1904 to 1914, largely due to malaria, yellow fever, and accidents. However, these figures are not accurate. Official records show 5,609 lives were lost in total, the majority of them being Barbadian workers. Around 300 Americans perished, according to author Matthew Parker’s book, "Hell’s Gorge: The Battle to Build the Panama Canal."

Trump may have inadvertently included deaths from a previous French attempt to construct the canal in the late 1880s, which resulted in between 20,000 and 25,000 fatalities, but with almost no American casualties.

Panama’s Role in Canal Management

For decades, the U.S. was the canal’s operator. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed a treaty gradually transferring control to Panama. The agreement stipulated that the canal remain a neutral territory, open to all nations, and that the U.S. could still intervene to protect it. The U.S. finally handed over the canal in 1999, and Panama has managed it since.

Trump has asserted that the canal is now controlled by "tremendous amounts of Chinese military," but Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino refuted this, stating, "For God’s sake, there are no Chinese soldiers in the canal."

While no evidence supports Trump’s claim of a Chinese military presence, U.S. observers are concerned about two ports managed by Hutchison Whampoa, a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Hutchison Holdings. Furthermore, China is involved in the construction of a new bridge over the canal.

Canal Traffic and Tariffs

Each year, around 13,000 to 14,000 ships traverse the Panama Canal. The U.S., China, and Japan are its primary clients, with nearly 72% of cargo transiting the canal moving to or from U.S. ports.

Recently, reduced water levels have led to fewer transits and higher fees. In fiscal year 2020, the canal generated a net profit of $3.45 billion.

Given the significant U.S. trade that passes through the canal, American businesses have also felt the pinch of increased fees. In December, Trump accused Panama of imposing "ridiculous" and "excessive" tolls, amounting to "extortion."

Can the U.S. Retake or Reduce Canal Tariffs?

The 1977 treaty obliges Panama to maintain the canal’s neutrality, preventing it from giving preferential tariffs to U.S.-flagged ships. However, Trump’s administration could potentially pressure the canal authority to lower prices or suspend planned increases during future crises.

A more unlikely scenario is the U.S. militarily retaking the canal, though it’s not entirely without historical precedent. In 1989, U.S. forces invaded Panama to oust the military dictator Manuel Noriega. The subsequent U.S.-backed government dismantled Panama’s army. Today, Panama has a small paramilitary force. Trump hasn’t ruled out military action to resolve the dispute.

The Canal: A Symbol of Pride, Power, and Prosperity

The Panama Canal stands as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance, connecting two vast oceans and facilitating global trade. As the new U.S. administration takes office, the canal’s future—and the nature of U.S.-Panama relations—hangs in the balance.

Bulgarian Artist Rossen Karamfilov Condemns Krasimir Gorsov for Embezzling Funds Meant for His Disabled Daughter

In a recent outburst, Bulgarian artist, singer, and poet Rossen Karamfilov lambasted Krasimir Gorsov, the father of Manuel, who was severely disabled in an accident involving Maximum Staviski. Karamfilov’s righteous fury was sparked by Vladislav Vergalov’s recent revelation that Gorsov had embezzled 360,000 BGN from his daughter’s medical fund for gambling, disappearing without a trace just before Christmas.

"Remember this face," Karamfilov warned, "This is the face of evil. This is Krasimir Gorsov, the father of Maneula, who was irreparably harmed in the accident with Maximum Staviski. This ‘father’ stole 360,000 BGN from his daughter’s medical account and vanished without a trace, leaving his wrecked child to fend for herself, uncaring if she lived or died."

Karamfilov sees Gorsov as a symbol of the flawed system that’s destroying Bulgaria. "He’s a gambling addict, a product of our society’s decay. He’s the evil that can only be conquered by good. We must expose him. He’s a black hole, a demon lurking around every corner. We must fight against such demons, against rampant parents like him, and against the unscrupulous worldwide," Karamfilov added, son of renowned painter Kolio Karamfilov.

Bulgaria Braces for Sharp Weather Change: Rain, Snow, and Misting Ahead

Bulgarian meteorologist Petrov Yanukov has announced a significant shift in the country’s weather pattern, with rain and snow expected to hit parts of the country in the coming days.

As of tomorrow evening, residents of Northwest Bulgaria can expect rainfall that will transition into snowfall, with Yanukov warning of potential ice formation along the Vidin-Montana line in the evening. Motorists are urged to keep an eye on temperature fluctuations.

Friday is expected to be misty, with visibility dropping below 100 meters in some areas, posing a significant risk to drivers, according to Yanukov’s interview with Bulgaria ON AIR.

Come Saturday, temperatures will rise in Western and Northern Bulgaria, leading to the accumulation of a 1-2 cm snow cover.

Sunday brings rain and snow to the southern parts of the country, with up to 15 cm of snow expected in mountainous regions. Temperatures will hover around 2-5°C, with Sofia expected to reach around 2°C. The snow cover in southwestern Bulgaria could cause mobility issues.

Despite the harsh weather, Yanukov highlighted Saturday as the ideal day for high-altitude tourism, noting that temperatures in the mountains are relatively mild compared to the January average.

Looking ahead to next week, Yanukov predicts a cold spell with temperatures ranging from -1°C to 4-5°C.

Monday and Tuesday will see widespread rainfall and snowfall, with snow cover expected to exceed 20 cm in some areas. Even the Black Sea coast will receive a light snowfall of 2-3 cm. In midweek, Dobrudja is expected to see clear skies before the cold spell resumes.

While mists may not be constant, visibility could be reduced due to snowfall and higher humidity, the meteorologist warned.

In positive news, Yanukov expects air currents to flow into the Sofia valley today and tomorrow, helping to clear the polluted air in lower layers.

Minister Tchakarov’s Dissent: Criticism of Premier Gerchev’s Appointment of Deputy

Cultural Minister Expresses Dissatisfaction with Appointment of Deputy Minister by Bulgarian PM

Bulgarian Minister of Culture, Nayden Todorov, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the appointment of Ildiko Ganev as deputy minister by Prime Minister Dimitur Glavchev.

Todorov stated, "Despite knowing my reservations, the Premier went ahead and appointed Ganev, which has led to communication difficulties in the first two months." He further elucidated, "In April, following discussions with [opposition leader] Hristо Mutafchiev, I proposed Ganev to the Premier. After the government change in August, Ganev was reappointed without my consultation."

Comparing the previous regime, Todorov remarked, "In Galab Donev’s cabinet, there was better synergy with the deputy ministers." He also mentioned that Glavchev appointed another deputy minister, Kalin Velov, with whom he maintains regular communication.

When asked about his deputies’ loyalty, Todorov said, "I don’t dwell on such questions. I focus on ensuring my actions align with my principles. I’m not here to lead battles; I want to see progress in the cultural sector."

Clarifying his stance on the theaters’ financial woes, Todorov commented, "A closed financial system cannot sustain an open one. Theater arts face annual funding shortfalls. Around 5 million BGN is still unpaid, and the budget has run out."

Regarding the safety of the Pangour Treasure at the museum "Echi", Todorov reassured, "There’s no imminent threat to our artifacts or collections. The museum is well-secured with double walls and fire-resistant materials. The treasure is insured, and we hope it won’t come to that."

Expressing confidence in the museum’s preparations, he said, "The ‘Echi’ museum will remain closed until at least January 13. The thorough preparations for this exhibition involved several years of collaboration between Bulgarian museums and ‘Echi’."

According to Todorov, the tourism earnings from the Pangour Treasure’s exhibitions amount to six-digit figures.

"Deputies Replace Legal Certainty: A Cascade of Personalized Laws Instead of New VSS"

Bulgarian Parliament Unlikely to Amend Judicial Authority Act Before SARAFFOV Election

Professor Plamen Kirov, a constitutional law expert, has expressed pessimism about the Bulgarian Parliament amending the Judicial Authority Act before the election of the next Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) Chair, Borislav Sarrafov. Kirov made these remarks during a BTK interview.

Korov explained that there are currently three separate bills and that the legal committee must consolidate these into a single proposal before a vote on the first reading. He believes that President Rumen Radev is unlikely to issue a decree during this process, potentially allowing the changes to come into force.

"Parliament is not making any efforts to select a parliamentary quota for the SAC," said Kirov. "Instead, they’re introducing a multitude of bills to prevent the current SAC from selecting a specific individual. All these bills can be seen as Tailor-made laws," he added.

Korov was critical of the lack of effort to resolve the issue of who will be selected. "If we fail this election, what’s next? And what if the next selected candidate is worse? Can we guarantee the next one will be to everyone’s liking, and if not, we’ll have even more bills?" he questioned.

Boris Parody: Transforming into a Pumpkin in America’s Healthcare System

by Chief Editor January 8, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Nana Gladushi, former host of Bulgaria‘s “Sudyben Spor,” has taken to social media to express her displeasure with the U.S. healthcare system. Describing it as a challenge, she posted, “It’s like fighting a pumpkin as a pig — a struggle.”

Gladushi, who is a patient and also familiar with the Bulgarian healthcare system, was particularly vexed by the complexity of getting a simple blood test done in America. “It took me two months to figure out how to get a blood test done,” she revealed, still unsure about the process.

The American Dream may seem ideal, but for those navigating the healthcare system, it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Gladushi’s experience highlights the complexities and challenges faced by many international patients and even locals trying to access basic healthcare services in the U.S.

While the U.S. healthcare system boasts some of the world’s most advanced medical technologies and treatments, its complexities can leave patients bewildered and frustrated. From deciphering insurance policies to understanding appointment scheduling, the system can be overwhelming.

Gladushi’s experience also underscores the importance of healthcare literacy. As patients become more involved in managing their care, understanding the intricacies of the system they’re navigating becomes crucial.

With the U.S. healthcare system under constant scrutiny, experiences like Gladushi’s can spark important conversations about accessibility, understanding, and improvement.

Title: Uncontrollable Firestorm: Los Angeles Wildfires Rage On, Forcing Mass Evacuations and Silicon Beach Shutdown

Article:

The wrath of nature is unleashing a fiery inferno unlike any other in the heart of Los Angeles, with terrifying winds of up to 160 km/h fanning the relentless flames. The "Pacific Palisades," home to countless Hollywood stars, is under siege, as reported by the BBC. An unprecedented state of emergency has been declared in Los Angeles County, with Santa Monica and Malibu also in the line of fire. The Woolsey Fire alone has engulfed over 3,000 hectares, claiming lives and leaving thousands without power.

More than 52,000 residents have been evacuation orders, with another 47,000 under warning. According to Poweroutage.us, over 330,000 Californians are left without electricity, including over 223,000 in LA County. Though the numbers fluctuate, as power is gradually restored.

Firefighters are battling the blazes, but "extreme fire behavior" makes containment nearly impossible. The Woolsey Fire has been moving so swiftly that it’s equivalent to burning five football fields per minute. Meteorologists predict that winds will remain strong, with worse conditions yet to come. Residents have described the fire as sudden and unpredictable, with conditions changing rapidly.

Among those affected are some of the most recognizable faces in entertainment. Actors like Tom Hanks, Ben Affleck, and Mark Hamill, best known as Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars," have been forced to evacuate. Hamill tweeted that he fled his Malibu home at the "last possible second," describing the fire as the worst since 1993.

Mid-storyàct breaks

After the break:

The Woolsey Fire is expected to be one of the most destructive in the LA area since 2011, according to the National Weather Service. The unusually hot summer followed by scant rainfall has left the region tinder-dry and vulnerable. Climate change, as factors like UCLA’s Center for Climate Science director Alex Hall notes, is also playing a significant part.

In the meantime, Bulgarian officials have confirmed the safety of the Panagyurishte Treasure at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The treasure, along with other Bulgarian artifacts, has been secured in the museum’s fire-resistant vaults. Earlier, Minister of Culture, dr. Nadia typical increased security measures, as the museum faced potential danger from the nearby wildfires.
