"Snow Depth Reaches 2 Meters Near Plovdiv; Power Outage Lasts Seven Days"

Severe Storm Batters Pловdiv: Two Meters of Snow, Power Outages for Days

The cittadels of Bulgaria’s second-largest city, Pловdiv, are grappling with the aftermath of a intense snow-01-12-24/index.html” title=”Winter storm hits central and eastern US | CNN”>snowstorm that has left streets covered in over two meters of snow and thousands of residents without power for nearly a week. The unprecedented weather event, which started late last week, has adepts of chaos in its wake, with supplies running low in many affected areas.

Pловdiv Blanketed in Snow

Snowplows are struggling to keep up with the relentless snowfall, which has turned major roads into impassable molestations. Residents have shared alarming snimki on social media, showing snowdrifts towering over vehicles and houses. The heavy snow has also resulted in numerous fallen tree branches and uprooted trees, posing a significant danger to both people and properties.

As of now, the Road Infrastructure Agency has reported that around 300 kilometers of roads in the Plovdiv region remain impassable, with many villages isolated and cut off from the outside world. Emergency services are working tirelessly to restore access and ensure the delivery of essential supplies, but the challenge is monumental due to the ongoing snowfall and extremely low temperatures.

Power Outages Persist

Thousands of Plovdiv residents have been enduring power outages for over seven days, with some areas still without electricity as of this morning. The state-owned electric utility company, EVN, has been inundated with complaints and appeals for assistance, but repairing the extensive damage caused by the storm is proving to be a slow and painstaking process.

In addition to the challenge of restoring power, EVN is also facing criticism for its alleged shortcomings in anticipating and preparing for the storm. Many residents have expressed frustration with the lack of information and coordination in the face of the crisis, with some even reporting that they have been given incorrect or misleading information about expected restoration times.

Remote Villages Hit Hard

The snowstorm’s impact has been particularly devastating in remote villages surrounding Plovdiv. In one instance, the village of Lylkowo has been left without telephone connectivity, raising concerns about the ability of residents to access help in an emergency. In another nearby village, Biale Cherkva, live power lines have been left exposed after falling trees, posing a grave danger to residents.

Emergency services and volunteers have been working around the clock to reach these isolated communities and provide much-needed assistance. However, the challenging road conditions and ongoing snowfall have made it difficult for relief efforts to gain traction, leaving many villagers to fend for themselves in subzero temperatures.

Awaiting Relief

As Plovdiv residents brace for potentially another week of power outages and treacherous road conditions, there is a sense of growing despair and desperation in the City of the Hills. While emergency services and utility companies continue to work towards a swift resolution, the harsh reality of the situation is that the city faces an uphill battle against the unforgiving Bulgarian winter.

Update: As of publishing, both the Plovdiv municipality and the Ministry of Interior have assured residents that all available resources are being deployed to address the crisis. They have also urged citizens to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines during the ongoing snowfall.

Hundreds of Families in Gabrovo Remain Without Power on Fourth Day After Christmas Snowstorm

After four days of Christmas, hundreds of families in Gabrovo remain without power, and their patience is wearing thin. Residents have organized protests to be held outside the energy provider’s headquarters as the power restoration efforts continue. Nearly 50 villages in the municipality are affected, with hundreds more across the region.

The lack of electricity has also led to water outages in some areas due to the failure of pumped stations, and mobile networks have been disrupted as well. The Gabrovo Municipality has written to the Minister of Energy demanding immediate action to restore normal life in the affected areas.

Critics from the local administration have expressed frustration, noting that signals from mayors and deputy mayors were promptly relayed to the energy company, yet the situation has not improved.

Other regions affected include:

  • Lovech: Four villages are on their fourth day without power, along with several settlements in the Ugrichin Municipality.
  • Eastern Bulgaria: Dozens of villages in the Elena Balkan and Veliko Tarnovo region are still without power, water, and mobile networks.
  • Svishtov: Water supply is gradually being restored after a main water pipeline was repaired.
  • Rhodopes: Several villages are without electricity due to power network disruptions, with repair works ongoing.

Slovakia May Reverse Electricity Supply to Ukraine Over Russia Gas Transit Blockade

In a turn of diplomatic tension, Slovakia is considering reciprocal measures against Ukraine, including halting electricity supplies to Kyiv from January 1, if Ukraine indeed stops the transit of Russian gas through its territory, as reported by Reuters. Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico has hinted at these potential reciprocal measures.

"As of January 1, we will assess the situation and explore options for reciprocal measures against Ukraine," Fico stated in a video posted on his Facebook page. He added, "If necessary, we will halt electricity supplies to Ukraine, especially during network outages. Alternatively, we could agree on another course of action."

Ukraine has announced that it will cease the transit of Russian gas via its territory from January 1, 2023.

Bulgaria‘s Energy Crisis: DPS Leader Demands Action as Hundreds of Settlements Remain Without Power

Thousands of Bulgarians have been left in the cold for days, with more than 200 settlements across the country still without electricity. Political tension is mounting as DPS leader Delian Peevski has called for immediate action by the-KEAV (KEVR), the state-owned energy holding company.

Peevski, who is also the party’s parliamentary group leader, slammed the situation as "scandalous" and expressed concern that Minister Tesla "is frightening the ESCOs (Electro-Razpredelenie Poddrzhani – electricity distribution companies) which are responsible for the outages."

"People beading the Christmas holidays without heat is unacceptable," Peevski asserted.

The DPS leader is urging KEVR to launch an immediate investigation into the investments and technical preparedness of the networks, stating that "all Bulgarian citizens have paid for uninterrupted 24/7 power supply."

Peevski also warned that if the crisis persists, the most stringent sanctions might be implemented, including revoking the licenses of the ESCOs.

"If KEVR doesn’t act promptly, I will involve all competent authorities for a full audit of the electricity distribution companies," Peevski threatened. "There’s no excuse in the 21st century for thousands of Europeans in Bulgaria to be left without power, and for those responsible to go unpunished."

This comes as the latest development in Bulgaria’s ongoing energy crisis, which has seen frequent power outages and price hikes, leading to growing public discontent.

Power Restoration Efforts Continue in Western Bulgaria; 20 Villages in Veliko Tarnovo Region Affected

Efforts to restore power in parts of Western Bulgaria are ongoing, with teams from "Eлектрохолд" working to resolve outages, the company reports. Heavy snow cover and strong winds persist in affected areas, leading to frequent treefalls that cause power lines to snap and disrupt electricity supply.

All "EРМ Запад" teams are deployed on the ground, with the company’s coordination center redeploying personnel to the most affected regions. By 2:00 PM, power has been restored in the village of Borovets. However, conditions remain challenging in the municipalities of Troyan, Lovech, and Samokov.

Around 95% of power outages are attributed to trees falling onto electrical conductors, many of which are located outside designated service zones.

Power Disruptions in 20 Villages in Veliko Tarnovo Region

In Veliko Tarnovo region, around 20 villages are or have been experiencing power disruptions, according to the press center of the regional administration. Initially, 25 settlements were affected, but crews from the electricity distribution company have been swiftly addressing and resolving the issues. A majority of these villages are in the Elena Balkan area.

Roads are passable despite winter conditions, with some reports of fallen branches and trees on road surfaces. Emergency teams in the affected municipalities are working to clear these obstructions.

A major breakdown in the water supply to Svistov, caused by an aging pipeline in the "Паметниците" area, has disrupted water supply to the city, according to Mayor Gencho Genchev. Repairs are underway to restore service within the day. No other affected settlements have been reported, excluding those on special regimes.

The regional governor urges citizens to exercise caution if traveling, ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy.
