Tragedy on Denali: Three Climbers Die in Fall Near Treacherous Pass
A Latvian mountaineering expedition on Denali ended in tragedy this week after three members of a climbing group fell to their deaths near a high-altitude pass. The National Park Service confirmed that the incident occurred on Wednesday during a traverse of the mountain, North America’s tallest peak.
The climbers were part of a group of seven navigating the West Buttress route, the most frequently used path to the summit. The fall took place near Denali Pass, located approximately 18,200 feet above sea level. According to the National Park Service, a fourth member of the group was evacuated from the mountain and remains in critical condition. The remaining three climbers in the party provided assistance to those who fell before returning to their camp.
The Dangers of the West Buttress
The area between Denali Pass and the 17,000-foot high camp is well-known for its hazards, including steep ice, crevasses, and exposed ridges. The National Park Service notes that many injuries and deaths on the mountain have historically occurred on this specific traverse, often resulting from unprotected falls during a descent. To mitigate these risks, mountain guides and park rangers typically install and maintain snow pickets to serve as anchors on the steep slopes.
Denali’s history includes more than 130 fatalities since the establishment of the park. The current climbing season, which sees the majority of the 1,000 to 1,200 annual summit attempts take place in May and June, currently has 516 climbers on the mountain, according to park service spokesperson Scott Carr.
Recovery Efforts and Future Outlook
Recovery of the three deceased climbers has not yet been completed. Park rangers, who were managing the situation, were forced to wait for weather conditions to improve before attempting to reach the site. In a separate incident on Wednesday, two additional climbers not associated with the Latvian group were evacuated from the mountain by helicopter.
As the park service continues to monitor the mountain, the coming days may involve ongoing recovery operations pending favorable weather. The high-altitude environment of the Alaska Range, which peaks at 20,310 feet, remains a challenging landscape for rescue teams. While the West Buttress is the most popular route, the low success rate of summit attempts—with less than half of climbers reaching the top last year—underscores the technical difficulties and risks inherent in the expedition.
The incident follows a previous year in which the mountain saw two fatalities, both involving skiers, and 16 total evacuations.
