Bij een zware explosie in een chemische fabriek in de provincie Shandong in China zijn gisteren vijf mensen om het leven gekomen. Dat melden lokale autoriteiten. Achttien mensen raakten gewond en zes mensen zijn nog vermist. Naar hen wordt gezocht. De oorzaak van de explosie is niet bekendgemaakt.
De explosie was kort voor 12.00 uur lokale tijd in een industriegebied in de stad Gaomi, een stad met bijna 900.00 mensen in het noordoosten van het land. Het industrieterrein ligt daar in de buurt van woningen, winkels en scholen.
Kort na de explosie waren grote, donkergrijze wolken boven de fabriek te zien. Omwonenden tot op enkele kilometers afstand hoorden of voelden de explosie.

Na de ontploffing riepen de autoriteiten de noodtoestand uit. Volgens het Chinese ministerie voor Noodsituaties rukten ruim vijftig brandweerwagens en honderden medewerkers van hulpdiensten uit. Ook een team van de milieubescherming is naar de fabriek gestuurd, maar het is nog niet duidelijk hoe groot de schade is.
Twee boetes
In de fabriek worden stoffen vervaardigd waarmee pesticiden en medicijnen worden gemaakt. Het terrein is zo’n 50 hectare groot en er werken zo’n 300 mensen. Volgens persbureau AP kreeg het bedrijf vorig jaar minimaal twee keer een boete vanwege veiligheidsrisico’s, maar in september oordeelden inspecteurs dat de fabriek voldoende maatregelen had genomen om de risico’s te beperken.
