The Power of Student Activism: A Force for Political Accountability

Recent events in Jakarta highlight the evolving role of student activism in holding political figures accountable. On February 21, 2025, a large student demonstration took place outside the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters in Jakarta Selatan. The demonstration was in support of the KPK’s decision to detain Hasto Kristiyanto, the General Secretary of PDIP, on charges related to Harun Masiku’s case.

Understanding the Impact of Student Protests

Student protests have long been a catalyst for political change, and they continue to shape future trends in governance and accountability. In Jakarta, students rallied with banners reading “KPK Deserves Public Trust,” sending a powerful message about their expectations from anti-corruption bodies. Their actions underscore the growing demand for transparency and integrity among political elites.

Real-Life Examples and Data

The KPK’s arrest of Hasto Kristiyanto is a testament to its ongoing reforms aimed at eradicating political corruption. The demand for accountability is not limited to Indonesia; similar movements are gaining momentum globally.

New KPK Reason for Seizing Hasto Kristiyanto’s House

Headline: KPK Unveils Reason Behind Raid at PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto‘s Home in Bekasi

Subheading: Anticorruption Commission explains timing of search at residues of suspected bribery and obstruction of justice case

Article:

In a press conference held at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has disclosed the reasons behind its recent raid at the residence of Secretary-General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto, in Bekasi, West Java. The raid, conducted as part of the investigation into a suspected bribery and obstruction of justice case, was deemed necessary and timed appropriately by KPK investigators.

KPK spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika clarified that the timing of the search and seizure activities is at the discretion of the investigating team and is dependent on the requirement to gather evidence related to the case. " Penggeledahan kapan akan dilakukan, hanya pada penilaian penyidik," Tessa explained, dismissing speculations that the raid was conducted lately to divert attention from ongoing hot issues in the media.

The KPK acknowledged that some external parties may perceive the raid as tardy or even an attempt to shift focus from other pressing matters. However, Tessa emphasized that the commission could not prevent such interpretations. "Masalah penilaian apakah itu terlambat atau tidak, kami tidak bisa melarang pihak luar untuk berpikiran seperti itu," she said.

KPK Raids Hasto’s Residence

The KPK conducted a search and seizure operation at Hasto’s residence in Bekasi, marking a significant development in the case involving suspected bribery and obstruction of justice. Chairman of the KPK, Setyo Budiyanto, confirmed the operation, stating, "Ada kegiatan geledah oleh Satgas Penyidikan."

Hasto, a key suspect in the case of bribery related to the replacement of parliamentary seats (PAW), is alleged to have, along with Wahyu Setiawan (former KPU Commissioner), provided bribes to ensure that PDIP candidate Harun Masiku secured a seat in the DPR through PAW. Wahyu, Agustiani Tio Fridelina (Wahyu’s right-hand person), and Saeful (a private individual) have been convicted and served prison time. They have since been released.

Harun Masiku remains at large, while Hasto was only deemed a suspect in late 2024, along with Donny Tri Istiqomah. Setyo revealed that Hasto was reportedly involved in pressuring a religious leader to issue a fatwa in favor of Harun Masiku and impede Riezky Aprilia’s rightful PAW appointment.

Hasto is also a suspect in an obstruction of justice case, accused of ordering the submerging of his and Harun Masiku’s phones and instructing Harun Masiku to go into hiding.

KPK Concludes Search at PDIP Secretary-General’s Residence; Carries Out One Suitcase

Jakarta – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has completed its search at the residence of PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto in relation to the bribery case involving the replacement of parliamentary candidates (PAW) Harun Masiku. KPK investigators left the location with a blue suitcase.

As observed by detikcom on Tuesday (7/1/2025), at Hasto’s residence in Bekasi, West Java, KPK investigators departed from the house at 18:19 WIB. They were seen carrying a blue suitcase into a black Innova car. The investigators were seen wearing KPK vests and masks. However, no statement was provided regarding the search, and the investigators then left the location.

Previously, it was reported that KPK explained the purpose of its search at Hasto’s residence in Bekasi, West Java. KPK noted that the timing of the search was determined by the investigators’ needs.

"All searches, seizures, and related activities depend on the need to obtain evidence in the case being handled. The investigators are responsible for evaluating when and where to conduct a search," said KPK Chairwoman Tessa Mahardhika at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta Selatan on Tuesday (7/1).

Tessa acknowledged that many parties believe the search was late and merely a diversion from current hot topics in the media.

"Everyone has the right to form their own opinions about whether this is too late or not, and some people may view this as an attempt to divert attention from other major issues currently being discussed in the media," Tessa added.

Hasto is one of several suspects in the bribery case involving the replacement of parliamentary candidates. He is alleged to have collaborated with Wahyu Setiawan, then serving as a commissioner of the General Election Commission, to help PDIP candidate Harun Masiku secure a seat in the House of Representatives.

Other suspects in the case include Wahyu, Agustiani Tio Fridelina, Saeful, and Harun Masiku. Wahyu, Agustiani, and Saeful have been found guilty and served their prison sentences; all three have since been released. Harun Masiku remains at large.

Meanwhile, Hasto was only named as a suspect in late 2024, along with Donny Tri Istiqomah. KPK Chairperson Setyo Budiyanto stated that Hasto had attempted to influence the issuing of a religious ruling (fatwa) and had tried to persuade the candidate initially slated to take Harun Masiku’s seat, Riezky Aprilia, to willingly withdraw from the process.

Hasto is also a suspect in the case of attempted obstruction of justice. He is alleged to have instructed that his and Harun Masiku’s cell phones be damaged and that Harun Masiku flee the scene.

The case is still under investigation.

KPK Investigates PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto Today

by Chief Editor January 6, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Headline: Upcoming KPK Probe: Hasto Kristiyanto’s First Hearing as PDIP‘s Sekretaris Jenderal Turns into a Witness

Subhead: Commissioner of the Corruption eradication Commission (KPK) has scheduled an examination of Sekretaris Jenderal PDI Perjuangan (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto, on Monday, January 6, marking his first official appearance after being named a suspect in December 2022. He’s implicated in a bribery case involving KPU Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan.

The KPK issued a statement confirming the hearing, stating, "Yes, Mr. HK (Hasto Kristiyanto) has been scheduled for questioning by investigators today at 10:00 WIB in the Merah Putih Building of the KPK, in his capacity as a suspect." However, the spokesperson did not confirm whether Hasto would attend the hearing.

Today’s schedule also includes examinations for two key witnesses: former KPU RI Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan and former Bawaslu member Agustiani Tio Fridelina. The examinations were rescheduled as both witnesses were previously unavailable.

Hasto and PDIP lawyer Donny Tri Istiqomah were named suspects by the KPK in late December 2022. They are accused of bribing Wahyu to influence the appointment of Harun Masiku as a substitute member of the DPR RI for the 2019-2024 period.

In addition to the bribery charges, Hasto faces obstruction of justice charges. He is accused of leaking Operation Tangkap Tangan (OTT) information, which targeted Harun, and allegedly instructed Kusnadi, a PDIP staff member, to destroy evidence by submerging a phone. Hasto also stands accused of gathering witnesses to disguise the truth regarding the case.

The upcoming hearing will provide further insight into these allegations and could potentially lead to implicating more individuals or exonerating those involved. The public eagerly awaits the outcome of this high-profile case.

**Harun Masiku, Former Immigration Chief, Speaks Out on controverisal Entry目前RI

by Chief Editor January 4, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Title: Unraveling the Enigma: KPK‘s Probe into Ex-Imigration Chief Ronny Sompie’s Testimony on PDIP‘s Harun Masiku

Meta Description: KPK summons Ronny Sompie, former Dirjen Imigrasi, to testify in the case involving PDIP’s Harun Masiku, accused of corruption and bribery in the selection of DPR members. Sompie’s testimony sheds light on Masiku’s travel history, triggering a political storm.

Article:

In a significant development in the high-profile case involving PDIP politician Harun Masiku, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has called upon former Immigration Director General, Ronny Sompie, to provide testimony as a witness. This move comes nearly five years after Masiku’s initial involvement in the corruption case, adding another layer of intrigue to the politically charged saga.

A Witness Summoned

Sompie, successor-turned-witness, arrived at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, March 3. Dressed in a crisp white shirt and black pants, he was accompanied by his legal counsel. When asked about his visit, Sompie simply stated, "I’ve been summoned as a witness."

His appearance before the anti-corruption body marks a significant chapter in this ongoing drama. The tale of Harun Masiku’s whereabouts and political clout has captivated the nation, with key figures including former Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly, and current Secretary General of PDIP, Hasto Kristiyanto, finding themselves entangled in the web.

Masiku’s Elusive Timeline

In 2020, Masiku was named a suspect in a corruption case involving bribery in the selection of DPR members. Yet, his whereabouts remained a mystery, with conflicting reports circulating regarding his entry and exit from Indonesia. Sompie’s testimony is expected to provide clarity on this crucial aspect, potentially unraveling the discrepancies that have plagued the case thus far.

Sompie’s role as the former head of immigration has made him a crucial witness in this matter. His account of Masiku’s travel history, particularly the controversially ‘delayed’ data that led to conflicting statements from Yasonna Laoly, is likely to be a central focus of the KPK’s inquiry.

Political Tensions Rise

The unresolved case of Harun Masiku has caused significant unrest among the public and drawn-media scrutiny. The YLBHI (Yayasan Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Indonesia) has criticized the handling of the case, suggesting that Yasonna Laoly’s actions were merely an attempt to ‘scapegoat’ Sompie rather than address the root of the problem.

In the face of public pressure, former President Joko Widodo acknowledged the need for caution in public statements, particularly when dealing with sensitive data and information. "I only want to remind all ministers and officials to be careful when making statements. Especially those related to numbers, data, and information. Be cautious," he cautioned.

As the KPK continues its investigation, the political landscape remains uncertain. The testimony of Ronny Sompie promises to provide much-needed clarity, potentially redefining the narrative surrounding Harun Masiku’s involvement in the corruption case and the wider implications for Indonesian politics.

Understanding KPK’s Role: Hasto Kristiyanto’s Part in the Harun Masiku Case

Breaking News: PDIP‘S Hasto Kristiyanto Named Suspect in Harun Masiku Case by KPK

Jakarta, DetikNews, Dec 25th, 2024 – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has officially named Secretary General of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto, as a suspect in the Harun Masiku case. Hasto is alleged to be involved in two cases: bribery related to the electoral term swap (PAW) of Harun Masiku, and obstruction of justice in the KPK’s attempt to arrest Harun Masiku.

Background

The KPK has successfully convicted three individuals in the PAW Harun Masiku bribery case. They are former KPU commissioner Wahyu Setiawan, and two of his aides, Agustiani Tio and Saeful Bahri. Wahyu was sentenced to 7 years in prison and is currently serving time in a Semarang jail. Meanwhile, Harun Masiku, who has been at large for five years, remains unidentified.

Hasto’s Role in the Cases

KPK chairman Setyo Budiyanto officially announced Hasto’s status as a suspect at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta on Dec 24th, 2024. Setyo revealed Hasto’s critical role in the two cases. Here are the details:

1. Hasto Attempted to Elect Harun as DPR Member

Hasto’s alleged involvement began when he changed Harun’s electoral district from his home region of South Sulawesi to Dapil 1 South Sumatra for the 2019 legislative elections. "Hasto worked with Harun and others to bribe Wahyu Setiawan and Agustiani Tio. Hasto moved Harun from his home district of South Sulawesi to Dapil 1 South Sumatra," said Setyo.

Harun received 5,878 votes, significantly fewer than PDIP’s Rizky Aprilia who secured 44,402 votes. Rizky was expected to replace the late PDIP member Nazaruddin Kiemas. Setyo believes Hasto attempted to prevent Rizky from winning, even trying to persuade Rizky to withdraw and endorse Harun. After these efforts failed, Hasto allegedly bribed Wahyu Setiawan.

2. Hasto Met Wahyu Setiawan

Hasto reportedly met with Wahyu Setiawan in August 2019 to discuss two proposals made by Hasto.

The KPK’s investigation is ongoing. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Director-General of Customs Summoned Over Alleged Corruption Involving Former Banjarmasin Regent

KPK Summons Official in Connection to Case Involving Former Kutai Kartanegara Regent

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has summoned Rizal (RZ), the Director of Enforcement and Investigation at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, Ministry of Finance, as a witness in the case of alleged money laundering involving the former regent of Kutai Kartanegara, Rita Widyasari.

KPK spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika confirmed the news on Monday (23/12/2024), stating that RZ was summoned as a witness in the case against Rita, who is currently a suspect in the money laundering investigation. However, Mahardhika did not disclose whether RZ had already responded to the summon or the specific questions he would be asked.

The witness summon takes place at KPK’s headquarters, the Red and White Building, on Jl. Kuningan Persada, according to Mahardhika.

Rita initially faced charges of bribery and gratification in 2017, later standing trial and being convicted for gratification. In 2018, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison, fined Rp 600 million, and banned from holding political office for 5 years. The Central Jakarta Corruption Court found Rita guilty of accepting Rp 110 billion in bribes related to permits for a project in Kutai Kartanegara.

Rita attempted to appeal the verdict but was unsuccessful. The Supreme Court rejected her appeal for case review in 2021, and she has since begun serving her sentence at Pondok Bambu Prison.

Besides the gratification case, Rita remains a suspect in the money laundering case. In July 2024, KPK revealed that Rita had also received bribes from mining companies. Directer of KPK’s Investigation Unit Asep Guntur Rahayu disclosed that Rita received USD 5 for every metric ton of coal provided by a company.

Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing case.
