"Italy’s Medicine Shortages: February Expiry, Delays in Pharmaceutical Stickers"

by Chief Editor January 6, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Headline: Italy‘s Delay in Adopting EU Drug Packaging Regulations Risks Medicine Shortages

Subheadline: Failure to comply with EU regulations on drug packaging could lead to medicine shortages in Italy starting February 2025.

Article:

Italy is lagging in implementing an important European regulation on drug packaging, with potential consequences for millions of Italian patients. From February 9, 2025, many commonly used medicines could disappear from pharmacy shelves due to the country’s delay.

The Italian government has yet to specify how it will transpose the 2011 EU directive, which aimed to create a unified system against drug counterfeiting and tampering. Although initially given a deroga, Italy’s delay has left the pharmaceutical industry uncertain about how to proceed.

Three Key Changes Required

The revision brings three significant changes to drug packaging:

  1. Datamatrix Code: A 2D barcode to be printed on every box, ensuring traceability and providing information about the product’s origin and expiration date.
  2. National Drug Registry: A database that cross-references data with the European registry to authenticate drugs.
  3. Security Seal: An inviolable seal to guarantee the box’s integrity.

Goverment’s Ambiguity

The Italian government approved a decree in August outlining general principles but provided no concrete guidance on implementation. Consequently, the entire pharmaceutical supply chain has united under the National Medicines Verification Organisation (Nmvo) to engage in dialogue with the government. However, significant obstacles remain:

  • The decree’s confirmation by Parliament is pending, with a March deadline looming.
  • Uncertainty about who will provide the security seals and how to manage old packaging.

This uncertainty has prevented manufacturers from adjusting their production lines to accommodate the changes. The Nmvo has requested a two-year transition period, but it remains unclear if the government can accommodate this request. If not, pharmacies could face severe medicine shortages starting in February 2025.

Top Chinese Populations in Europe: A Look from Italy to France

by Chief Editor January 2, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Headlines: " Chinese Heritage in Europe: A Growing Presence and Calls for Equality"

In the heart of Paris, the French capital, protesters of Chinese descent united recently, raising their voices against racial injustice, underscoring a pertinent issue in Europe today. The demonstration came amidst a backdrop of a growing Chinese population on the continent, fueled by economic liberation and relaxed mobility restrictions in China.

According to Statista, five European countries host the largest Chinese communities. These include Italy, Spain, Germany, the UK, and France. China’s economic ascent has driven a surge in migration to Europe over the past few decades, as reported by the Parliamentary Assembly.

The Top Five: European Countries with Largest Chinese Populations

  1. Italy – Home to the largest Chinese population in Europe, Italy hosts approximately 300,216 residents of Chinese origin. Roman institutions and deep cultural roots seem to provide a strong attraction.

  2. Spain – Spain follows closely behind, with a sizeable Chinese population of 193,129. Spain’s vibrant culture and economic opportunities draw countless immigrants annually.

  3. Germany – Germany occupies third place, with a total population of Chinese origin standing at 149,550. Its robust economy and continued investment in technology likely make it a magnet for Chinese migrants.

  4. UK – The UK houses an estimated 124,000 residents of Chinese descent. Multiculturalism and extensive business ties may contribute to the UK’s appeal.

Relocation is often facilitated through familial and social networks, with immigration channels sometimes exploited. Today, Chinese Europeans, like all immigrants, grapple with integration challenges and biases.

The recent protests in Paris, led by individuals who represent this growing demographic, serve as a reminder of the necessity for inclusive policies and equal societal integration. It’s a clarion call that echoes across Europe, where the Chinese population continues to grow and contribute to the continent’s richness and diversity.

Italian Newspaper Names Benito Mussolini as ‘Man of the Year’

Title: Benito Mussolini Named ‘Man of the Year’ by Italian Newspaper in ‘Provocative’ Move

SEO Keywords: Benito Mussolini, Man of the Year, Italy, Fascism, Giorgia Meloni, Libertà, Satire, Controversy, Humor, Normalization of Fascism

Meta Description: Italian newspaper Libertà causes controversy by naming fascist dictator Benito Mussolini ‘Man of the Year,’ sparking debate on Italy’s relationship with its fascist past.

Article:

Italian newspaper Libértà, known for its close ties to the country’s right-wing government, has sparked controversy and outrage by naming fascist dictator Benito Mussolini as its «Årets mann» for 2024.

The cover of Tuesday’s edition of the Rome-based newspaper featured a bust of Mussolini with the caption:

“)]বলে gratuitously ,” at the top of his game, on a par with football star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The move has been widely criticized, with many viewing it as a disturbing normalization of fascism in Italy. Critics argue that Libertà, and by extension its ally Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni, are trivializing and endorsing a brutal regime that persecuted and killed thousands of Italians and persecuted Jews during World War II.

Mario Sechi, Libertà’s editor-in-chief and a former spokesperson for Meloni, defended the decision in an editorial. «It’s a satirical comment on the left’s obsession with fascism,» he wrote, adding that the choice was meant to provoke «those who still haven’t gotten the message: fascism is dead and buried.

Not everyone finds the joke funny. «It’s grotesque and obscene,» said Alan Friedman, an American author and TV personality who lives in Italy. «Mussolini was not just a dictator. He was a genocidal dictator,» Friedman told The Times.

Critics also point out that Libertà’s front page winked at a disturbing aspect of Mussolini’s legacy. Below the dictator’s bust was a dagger and a fasces, symbols of fascism. The fasces, a bundle of sticks with an axe head, was also part of the logo of the Italian Social Movement (MSI), a post-fascist party founded by Mussolini’s followers after World War II. Meloni’s party, Brothers of Italy, has ties to MSI.

Meloni, who has worked hard to distance herself from Mussolini, has not commented on Libertà’s stunt. Her party has roots in MSI, and the flame in the party’s logo is a nod to MSI’s trefleur logo, which featured a tricolor flame over Mussolini’s tomb.

The kåring comes amid a heated debate in Italy about the country’s fascist past. Some on the right seek to rehabilitate Mussolini, while the left decries what they see as disturbing normalisation of fascism. The 2022 film «Vallanzas» directed by Mussolini’s granddaughter, for example, sparked controversy with its sympathetic portrayal of the dictator.

The Libertà controversy echoes a broader debate about how to remember and understand the past, particularly in a country like Italy with a complex and often contentious relationship with its fascist era. While some see Mussolini as a man who made mistakes but ultimately brought stability and economic prosperity to Italy, others view him as a brutal dictator who must be condemned and remembered as such.

Italy‘s Fincantieri to Supply Indonesia with Two Advanced Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ships

Italy’s Fincantieri has announced a significant contract with Indonesia to provide two state-of-the-art Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) vessels, commonly known as the Paolo Thaon di Revel Class. These offshore patrol ships are designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including patrol duties, surface warfare, anti-piracy operations, surveillance, defense, and maritime area control.

Measuring approximately 143.00 meters in length and 16.50 meters in width, with a draft of 10.50 meters, these vessels are built to withstand various missions. Powered by a cutting-edge CODAG CC propulsion system that combines diesel engines with gas alternator turbines (TAG) or fuel cell power packs (FCPP), the PPA can reach speeds up to 32 knots and travel up to 5,000 nautical miles.

The ships can accommodate a maximum of 171 crew members, featuring a helicopter deck capable of supporting SH90 or EH101 helicopters, and a hangar that can house two SH90s or one EH101. The PPA is available in three configurations: Light, Light Plus, and Full, offering varying degrees of capability.

Key features of the PPA include:

  • Oto Melara 127mm/64 Vulcano and 76mm/62 Strales guns, Oerlikon KBA B06 25mm remote-controlled weapons systems, and Oto Melara remote-controlled weapon stations (RCWS) in the Light configuration.
  • Additional capabilities in the Light Plus and Full configurations, such as Aster anti-aircraft missiles, Teseo anti-ship missiles, and Black Arrow torpedoes.
  • Advanced systems like Combat Management System (CMS), Radar Navigation System, Infrared Surveillance System, Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, and Fire Control System.

On March 28, 2024, Fincantieri revealed that it had signed a contract with PT PAL to deliver two PPA vessels to Indonesia. The contract is valued at €1.18 billion, roughly equivalent to IDR 20.4 trillion. Indonesia has already activated the contract following the disbursement of funds by the Ministry of Finance.

Kepala Staf TNI Angkatan Laut (Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy), Laksamana TNI Muhammad Ali, confirmed on November 12, 2024, that the contract is likely active due to the prior Down Payment (DP) approval by the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

Unbuilt Specter: The World’s Failed architectural Ghost Story

China‘s Ghostly Skyscraper: The Unfinished Tale of Goldin Finance 117

Content:

In the bustling cityscape of China, where megapolis like Shanghai and Shenzhen are famous for their formidable skyscrapers, lies an unfinished giant that has earned an eerie reputation. Known as the world’s tallest ‘ghost’ skyscraper, Goldin Finance 117 is a stark reminder of the economic challenges that face even the most ambitious of development projects.

According to Oddity Central, the ill-fated tower was a brainchild of Goldin Group, aiming to be the second tallest building worldwide, trailing only Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa. Designed to reach approximately 600 meters, Goldin Finance 117 was poised to be a symbol of luxury and opulence, complete with a 117-story hotel and commercial spaces, plus retail and recreational facilities on lower floors and below ground.

The proposed structure was a cornerstone of the ‘Goldin Metropolitan’ scheme, a sprawling 1.8 square kilometer project that envisioned a blend of French and Italian-inspired residences, a vineyard museum, gardens, and even a polo club. However, the project faced headwinds from the outset, with the local government providing tepid support.

Construction began in 2008 but was halted two years later due to the global financial crisis. Goldin Group restarted the project in 2011 but encountered another setback in 2015, with progress stalling indefinitely. Since then, the unfinished colossus has stood as a spectral sentinel above its incomplete neighborhood, earning its bleak moniker.

Speculations abound about the project’s failure, with many pointing to the financial strain Goldin Group experienced following the 2008 crisis. Despite resuming construction, the company’s financial health plummeted in 2018, sounding the death knell for the ambitious skyscraper project.

The fate of Goldin Finance 117 has not been in vain, however. In 2020, Chinese authorities implemented restrictions on the construction of supertall buildings in a bid to promote more sustainable urban development.

While the tower’s future remains uncertain, its legacy serves as a cautionary tale for real estate developers and investors, and a poignant reminder that even in a country known for its architectural triumphs, economic realities cannot be ignored.
