Korea Selatan’s Political Drama: Yoon Skips Probe, Parliament Impeaches

Article:

South Korea‘s political drama continues to unfold as President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and subsequently suspended from his duties, missed a second summons from a military prosecutor’s office, reigniting criticism from the opposition.

In a nutshell, according to Reuters, President Yoon Suk Yeol was a no-show for the second time at a scheduled questioning by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) on Christmas Day, local time. He also missed the previous summon last week.

The president’s absence from the 10 AM hearing, and his earlier no-show, has sparked criticism from the opposition. They argue that Yoon’s actions could lead to the destruction of evidence, raising concerns about accountability.

However, in a televised address on December 7, just four days after declaring martial law, Yoon promised to face legal and political consequences for his actions.

In a dramatic turn of events, on December 14, Yoon was impeached by Parliament due to the brief martial law declaration. Now, his fate rests in the hands of the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to remove him from office or reinstate him.

Investigations into Yoon’s actions, as well as those of other officials, are ongoing. Prosecutors, police, and CIO are actively involved in the probe, which could potentially lead to charges of mutiny, abuse of power, or other crimes.

In the face of these investigations, a legal counsel for Yoon has stated that the president is willing to share his perspective directly during the legal proceedings related to the martial law declaration.

The political landscape in South Korea remains dynamic and unpredictable as the fate of President Yoon Suk Yeol hangs in the balance.
