Karachi Railway Land Worth Rs1.42 Billion Recovered in Anti-Encroachment Drive

KARACHI — In a decisive move to reclaim public infrastructure, authorities have successfully recovered approximately 2.72 acres of government-owned land along the Karachi Circular Railway route. The operation, which targeted land allegedly occupied for the private housing project “Sheikhani Sky Towers,” has resulted in the recovery of property valued at more than Rs1.42 billion.

The Operation

The joint task force, comprising Pakistan Railways, the Railway Police, and the district administration, executed the recovery following a critical legal development. On May 25, a court declined to extend a status quo order in case number 108/2026, effectively removing the legal barrier that had stalled action on the site. Located near Dow Hospital and the King Classic Apartments, the reclaimed land is a designated part of the official railway corridor.

During the operation, 12 individuals were taken into custody. A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways confirmed that FIRs have been registered against those detained, signaling a firm stance against the unauthorized use of public property.

Why It Matters

This recovery represents a significant milestone in the broader mandate to protect public assets from encroachment. For the Karachi Circular Railway, the restoration of this land is essential for maintaining the integrity of the transit corridor. The scale of the valuation—exceeding Rs1.42 billion—underscores the intensity of the struggle to manage government real estate in a dense urban environment where public land is frequently targeted for private development.

Looking Ahead

The successful reclamation of this site may serve as a template for further state interventions. As Pakistan Railways has reiterated that anti-encroachment operations are ongoing across the country, it is likely that authorities will continue to review other disputed sites where legal status quo orders may be nearing expiration or resolution.

Moving forward, the legal proceedings against the 12 detained individuals could provide further insight into the depth of the encroachment network. The district administration and railway authorities may face the task of securing the cleared perimeter to prevent future attempts at unauthorized occupation, ensuring the land remains reserved for its intended public use.
