Breaking: Police Bust Online Gambling Syndicate’s Money Laundering Scheme; Seize Luxury Hotel in Semarang
Jakarta – Police have detected an alleged money laundering operation linked to a major online gambling ring. The illegal activities were uncovered by detectives at the Indonesian National Police’s (Polri) Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim), who traced one of the criminal syndicate’s assets back to a luxurious hotel in Semarang, Central Java.
Luxury Hotel Seized Amid Ongoing Investigation
The targeted property is the four-star Hotel Aruss, currently under police surveillance. According to investigators, the hotel was funded using proceeds from illicit online gambling operations, totaling a staggering Rp 40.5 billion. The hotel is now in the hands of authorities.
"This operation is still ongoing, and the identities of those involved have yet to be confirmed," said Brigjen Helfi Assegaf, the director of the Criminal Investigation Agency’s Anti-Corruption and Special Crime Division (Dirtipideksus) during a press conference at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.
The criminal network allegedly runs multiple online gambling platforms, including Dapabet and Agen 138. The operation’s proceeds were allegedly laundered through a series of bank transfers between five accounts before being used to purchase the seized hotel.
Hotel Continues Operations Under Scrutiny
Despite the police intervention, the hotel remains operational. Assegaf explained that while the hotel’s manager is part of the criminal organization, they have been cooperating with the authorities as a witness.
"We’ve taken control of the hotel to prevent further transactions, but we’re not halting its day-to-day operations just yet. We’ll wait for further instruction," said Assegaf.
A hotel representative, Ahmad Maulana, confirmed that they are cooperating with the police investigation and have posted signs announcing the property’s seizure. The hotel’s public relations officer, Lala Nikmah, confirmed that operations continue as normal, with no reports of guests canceling their reservations.
Assegaf hinted that there may be additional seizures and charges in the near future as the investigation unfolds.
