Taiwan and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) are strengthening economic ties following the implementation of their Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA) in January 2025. Preparations are underway for the first ministerial-level joint committee meeting, signaling a commitment to deepening bilateral trade and investment.
Building a Stronger Partnership
The ECA, initially signed in October 2019, covers a broad range of areas including economic cooperation plans, investment promotion and protection, customs procedures, trade remedies, intellectual property, and transparency. A joint committee was established to regularly review and refine the agreement, ensuring its continued effectiveness.
On April 8th, officials from both nations met in Majuro, the capital of the RMI, to begin planning the inaugural ministerial-level meeting. The meeting was co-chaired by Ywao Elanzo, the RMI’s Deputy Secretary of Natural Resources and Commerce, and Hu Chi-chuan, Deputy Director-General of Taiwan’s International Trade Administration. Both Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and the RMI’s Minister of Natural Resources and Commerce Anthony Muller delivered opening remarks.
Trade Growth Already Evident
The removal of tariffs on goods listed in the ECA has already yielded positive results. In 2025, bilateral trade between Taiwan and the RMI reached approximately $234 million USD – a significant increase of 74.43% compared to 2024. Taiwan’s exports to the RMI primarily consist of fuel for fishing vessels, fishing nets, fishery products, and grains, while imports from the RMI are largely frozen fish.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has affirmed its commitment to maximizing the benefits of the ECA, pledging to integrate resources across various government agencies and maintain a consistent dialogue with the RMI.
What’s Next?
The upcoming ministerial-level joint committee meeting could establish a firm timeline for future cooperation initiatives. It’s likely that discussions will focus on specific projects outlined in the ECA, aiming to further enhance economic and technical collaboration. Analysts expect that continued dialogue and a commitment to the agreement’s principles will be key to realizing its full potential.
