Operations at Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) business process outsourcing (BPO) facility in Nashik, Maharashtra, have been temporarily suspended as allegations of sexual abuse and forced religious conversion come to light. Employees have been instructed to function from home until further notice.
A Pattern of Abuse
The Nashik centre is now the focus of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe following allegations of sexual abuse, mental harassment, and religious coercion. At least nine women employees have come forward alleging a years-long pattern of misconduct, including pressure to participate in religious practices and consume specific foods against their will.
Nashik Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik stated that the investigation suggests seven male accused operated as an organised group, targeting female employees. Police have registered nine First Information Reports (FIRs), including one filed by a male employee alleging religious harassment and attempted conversion.
Arrests and Accusations
Eight individuals – seven men and one woman – have been arrested in connection with the case, while another female accused remains at large. The arrested men have been identified as Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Aftab Ansar, and Shahrukh Sheikh. Some of the accused allegedly held positions of authority, such as team leaders, and misused their roles.
According to police, an HR head allegedly discouraged a victim from filing a complaint, stating “these things happen,” and sided with the accused. Another woman has been named in a case of religious harassment.
The nine FIRs detail allegations of inappropriate touching, lewd remarks, stalking, intrusive questioning, and unwanted advances dating back to 2022. Complaints also allege religious harassment, including derogatory remarks and attempts at forced conversion.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have contacted the State Intelligence Department (SID), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate potential larger links or funding angles. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also initiated a fact-finding committee to conduct an on-site inquiry on April 18.
Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran has described the allegations as “gravely concerning and anguishing” and announced a thorough investigation led by TCS Chief Operating Officer Arathi Subramanian.
