WEST LOS ANGELES — The Riot Stage, a teen-founded Shakespeare theater and film company, is set to return to the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble on May 20 and 21. Led by 15-year-old Company Director Samantha Leeds, the company will present a new original production that integrates cinematic storytelling with live performance.
Developed by Leeds in collaboration with Creative Director Zoey Zimmerman, the production departs from the format of a traditional school play. The work utilizes high-end filmed sequences, shot specifically for the show, and integrates them into a fully staged theatrical experience. This hybrid approach is designed to reimagine Shakespeare through a contemporary, youth-driven lens, allowing the narrative to move fluidly between the screen and the stage.
Now entering its second season, The Riot Stage serves as a collaborative hub for student performers from various Los Angeles schools. The company’s stated mission is to utilize the timeless themes and stories of Shakespeare to transform the lives of young people while making classical work feel immediate and accessible to new audiences.
The company first drew significant attention during its inaugural season, where both performances sold out. The productions attracted a wide cross-section of the Los Angeles creative community, including performers such as Alanis Morissette and Bill Hader. Leeds’ efforts in building the student-led company from the ground up were previously highlighted in a cover story by The Argonaut.
Beyond the stage, Leeds has received recognition for her filmmaking. She was recently honored with the New Talent Award at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, a prestigious event for emerging filmmakers under the age of 25.
The Riot Stage represents a rare student-driven model that bridges professional-level creative ambition with a collaborative, youth-led structure. Looking ahead, the company’s long-term vision may include expanding its reach further beyond the theater, as You’ll see plans to potentially adapt this work into a feature film.
Performances will take place May 20 and 21 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Tickets are currently available via Eventbrite.
