Hundreds Protest Power Outage in Troyan; Thousands Struggle Through Fourth Day Without Electricity
TROYAN, BULGARIA — Hundreds of residents took to the streets in a spontaneous protest today, assembled outside the regional energy distribution company’s office in Troyan. Locals have been without power for four days, with no clear resolution in sight.
The impromptu protest saw participants attempt to gain access to the building, seeking an explanation from the investment director. As he exited, the director’s car nearly struck one of the protesters, according to Nova TV.
With Christmas celebrations ongoing, thousands are left in the cold and dark. Since the beginning of the holidays, all 21 settlements in the Troyan region have experienced temporary power outages. The heavy snowfall, with snow depth reaching 95 cm in some areas, has been cited as the primary cause.
While power has been restored to most areas, five out of 21 settlements remain without electricity, as confirmed by Troyan Mayor Donka Mihailova.
The community has been left scrambling for solutions, with many relying on diversions like gas-powered heaters and temporary generators. The sporadic nature of the outages has only added to the frustration, leaving people unsure when, or if, their power will be restored.
Authorities have assured residents that they are working tirelessly to resolve the issue. However, with the heavy snowfall expected to continue in the coming days, fears remain that the situation could worsen before it improves.
