Howell learned of Johnson’s situation after watching him via her door camera and subsequently talking to him on her doorstep. “The other day, I looked out my door cam and saw an 81-year-old man slowly and painstakingly carrying my heavy luggage that had been lost on a recent flight up a steep flight of stairs,” Howell wrote in the fundraiser description. She added that Johnson looked exhausted and his steps were heavy with effort.
Recognizing that Johnson is a deeply proud, selfless, and dedicated husband who would never ask for charity himself, Howell decided to step in. As of Wednesday morning, the online fundraising effort reached $87,000. All collected funds are designated to cover Josephine’s medical bills, allowing Johnson to retire from the delivery route and focus entirely on caring for his wife.
