Thai Women Exploit Visa-Free Policy to Traffic in Taiwan, Outnumbering Chinese Counterparts
Authorities in Taiwan are raising alarm over an increasing number of Thai women, taking advantage of the visa-free policy to enter the country, and engaging in prostitution. Data suggests that Thai women are surpassing their Chinese counterparts in this illegal activity, raising concerns about human trafficking and the effectiveness of current preventive measures.
Police sources indicate that the surge in Thai women working as sex workers in Taiwan is due to the ease of entry facilitated by the visa-free policy. While the scheme aimed at boosting tourism, it has inadvertently created a loophole for human traffickers to exploit. Unlike Chinese women, who often use student or work visas, Thai women can bypass these regulations by entering on visa-free status.
The profits generated by this illicit trade are substantial. A report from PChome Online News stated that some Thai women are earning more than NT$500,000 (approximately US$16,800) per month. This high income not only entices victims but also attracts exploitative intermediaries.
The situation has devised a challenging predicament for law enforcement. One method proposed is limiting the duration of visa-free stays to one month, with the potential to further discourage such activities. However, this measure could impact legitimate tourism and Taiwanese diplomacy with Thailand.
"Wind Media" reported that the current "free pass" for these Thai women may lead to a "great escape" scenario, potentially triggering a wave of similar cases across the country. Officials are deliberating on targeted strategies to deter this trend while minimizing collateral damage to tourism and diplomatic relations.
