Headline: Crypto Pioneer Dos Santos Arrested in Montenegro; US Wins Extradition Battle
Article:
The crypto world is buzzing following the arrest of Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon in Montenegro. The South Korean national was detained at the request of the United States, where he faces charges of fraud linked to the collapse of the Terra LUNA ecosystem last year.
Kwon, often referred to as the "crypto king," was apprehended in March 2023, ending a months-long global manhunt. His arrest followed the catastrophic meltdown of Terra’s stablecoin, UST, and its sister token, LUNA, which resulted in billions of dollars in losses for investors worldwide.
The US and South Korea both submitted extradition requests, but it was the former that emerged victorious. A Montenegrin court ruled on February 22 that Kwon would be extradited to the US rather than his home country. While this decision was initially upheld, an appeal delayed the process until recently.
Minister of Justice Bojan Božović announced the final decision, stating, "All legal conditions for the extradition of Do Kwon have been met, and the majority of the legal criteria favor the US request. Therefore, I have signed the order for his transfer to the United States."
As Kwon preparations for his extradition, the crypto community awaits further developments in this high-stakes saga.
