Title: Congolese Politician Francis Mvemba’s Hotel Debt Lands Him in Senegalese Prison

A Senegalese court has sentenced former Congolese presidential candidate Francis Mvemba to three months imprisonment, suspended, for failing to pay his hotel bill at the Petit Paradis in Mbour. Mvemba’s prolonged stay and unpaid meals led to his arrest by Ngaparou gendarmerie after the hotel management sought police intervention.

Mvemba, a politician and businessman from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), initially booked a three-night stay but extended his visit. He was later upgraded to a suite with a whirlpool bath due to an overbooking issue. However, according to the hotel’s management, Mvemba only paid for basic services, while his meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—were served in his room. He settled 900,000 F CFA but still owed 3,623,000 F CFA.

Exasperated by repeated promises to pay, the hotel’s manager contacted the Ngaparou gendarmerie. During his court appearance, Mvemba disputed the allegations. Christian Vespari, the hotel’s director, testified that Mvemba was reminded to settle his bill five days before his planned departure but refused. Mvemba’s family also left Senegal, taking most of their luggage with them, just days before his arrest.

Mvemba insisted he planned to pay, alleging he was awaiting a money transfer. The prosecutor, however, pointed out that Mvemba’s failure to settle his debts showed a lack of responsibility, especially for someone aspiring to lead a country. The judge agreed, sentencing Mvemba to three months imprisonment, suspended, and ordered him to pay his outstanding hotel bill.

This incident is not the first time Mvemba has been in the spotlight for financial issues. In 2019, he was accused of owing billions of Congolese francs to the Kinshasa government and several private companies. Mvemba dismissed the claims, attributing them to political rivals.

This case serves as a reminder that even notable figures are bound by laws and societal norms, and failure to adhere can lead to consequences affecting their personal and professional reputation.
