In an alarming development, a terrorist attack during New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans has left 14 dead and numerous injured, shocking the nation and sparking a massive investigation. A key focus of this probe is the use of an unprecedented explosive device by the attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, which has never been employed in terrorist acts in the United States or Europe.
Authorities confirmed that Jabbar had planted two explosive devices in the bustling Bourbon Street, but they failed to detonate. The investigation is currently centered around determining how Jabbar obtained the materials and managed to construct such a device.
The explosive is described as extremely rare, and its use in a terrorist attack is a first for the U.S. and Europe. This development has raised the alert level among security agencies, which are now exploring Jabbar’s recent travels, including a trip to Egypt, to ascertain if he received training or information to create the explosive there.
Investigators are also examining if Jabbar became radicalized during his Egypt visit, as reported by ABC News. In his vehicle, they found two pistols, an ISIS flag, and a transmitter intended to detonate the bombs, which malfunctioned. Moreover, a video was discovered where Jabbar pledged allegiance to a terror organization, bolstering suspicions about the attack’s inspiration.
Before the attack, Jabbar set fire to a rental home in Mandeville Street, where evidence, including remnants of explosive materials and a suspected homemade rifle silencer, was discovered.
The FBI has sent the transmitter, weapons, and other objects to their lab for analysis, while over 1,000 tips and videos from security cameras are being reviewed. So far, no indications of a larger network have been found, indicating Jabbar possibly acted alone.
Tourism in New Orleans appears unaffected, with forthcoming events like the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, and Jazz Fest proceeding as planned. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will visit New Orleans next Monday to honor the victims, while Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer has requested a detailed FBI report on the attack and a recent Las Vegas explosion before the upcoming presidential inauguration.
