2024: A Devastating Year for Ukraine‘s Power Grid

Ukraine’s energy sector faced an unprecedented onslaught in 2024, with the country’s power grid suffering devastating damage. According to Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko, the year was marked by extensive destruction, leaving the nation’s electricity infrastructure severely battered.

In a television telethon, Galushchenko stated, "The damage was immense, far greater than in previous years. The nature of the strikes changed, becoming more complex and involving advanced weaponry. Indeed, 2024 was the most challenging year for our energy system."

Throughout 2024, Russia launched 13 massive attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, leading to the loss of around 10 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity. For perspective, the combined capacity of all Ukrainian nuclear power plants still under Ukrainian control is less than 8 GW.

These relentless assaults have left the country grappling with severe power outages and energy shortages, highlighting the dire state of its electricity infrastructure following years of conflict. With no signs of respite in sight, Ukraine continues to brace for the immense challenges ahead in maintaining its energy supplies and rebuilding its ravaged power grid.
