President‘s Office Expresses Disapproval as Acting President Appoints Two Constitutional Court Justices
In an unexpected move, President Moon Jae-in‘s acting successor, Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki, unilaterally appointed two new members to the Constitutional Court today, drawing sharp criticism from the presidential office.
The presidential office expressed its disappointment, stating, "It’s deeply regretful that the acting president, in his acting capacity, overstepped the bounds of his authority." An official from the office stated, "The acting president’s move was an overreach, and we fear it may only exacerbate political tensions."
Earlier today, Acting President Hong Nam-ki chaired his first Cabinet meeting and announced his decision to appoint candidate Justices Jeong Gi-seon and Cho Han-chang, while delaying the appointment of candidate Justice Ma Ah-heung until a bipartisan agreement is reached.
This unforeseen action by the acting president has sparked a political firestorm, with opposition parties already vowing to challenge the appointments in the National Assembly.
