Argentina Opens Skies: Sky Airlines Peru Expands International Routes
The Javier Milei administration continues its aeronautical deregulation program, granting permission to Peru’s Sky Airlines to operate in Argentina. The airlines can now serve routes in Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, following publication in the official gazette.
Previously, Sky Airlines was authorized to provide international air passenger, cargo, and mail services solely on the Lima-Buenos Aires-Santiago de Chile route. Now, its operations have significantly expanded thanks to a government decree that aims to foster competition and boost connectivity in the region.
The government’s decision was praised by aviation experts who see it as a step towards liberalizing the aviation sector. According to the official resolution, Sky Airlines Peru has fulfilled all legal and administrative requirements to offer these services. Both the National Directorate of Air Transport and the General Directorate of Legal, Technical, and Administrative Affairs of the National Civilian Aviation Administration (ANAC) have approved the authorization.
Consequently, the Undersecretariat of Air Transport has granted Sky Airlines Peru the right to provide international regular air transport services for passengers and cargo. This permission corresponds to the "fourth freedom of the air," which allows flights between two foreign countries, complying with specific regulations.
The airline will now offer new destinations in Argentina, with rights to "fifth freedom traffic," allowing it to skip intermediate points on its flights. These new routes include connections to several cities in Brazil, such as Salvador de Bahía, São Paulo, Porto Alegre, and Rio de Janeiro. In addition, Sky Airlines Peru will serve international routes between Buenos Aires and Lima (Peru), Santiago de Chile (Chile), and Montevideo (Uruguay).
With this expansion, competition in the South American aviation market increases, potentially leading to more comprehensive flight offerings, reduced fares, and improved services for passengers. Both Sky Airlines Peru and the National Civilian Aviation Administration have been duly informed about the changes.
