Title: Argentina‘s Political Landscape After a Year: Milei Holds Steady, Villarruel Faces Backlash

After a year in power, Argentina’s political scene has seen a shift in public perception of key figures, with surveys shedding light on the nation’s sentiment toward its leaders. A recently conducted poll by Opina Argentina provides insights into the image of major political figures, including President Javier Milei and Vice President Victoria Villarruel.

Milei Maintains Positive Image

The survey, taken from December 31, 2023, to January 3, 2024, shows that Milei’s image has stabilized since he assumed the presidency. With a 53% positive rating, he enjoys support across various demographic segments, particularly among men (58%) and young people (61%). Notably, his image is most positive in the interior of Buenos Aires Province (59%), but his least supportive region is Patagonia, also with 59%.

Villarruel Faces Criticism

In contrast, Villarruel has seen her image sour over the past year. Her negative rating increased by six points to reach 54%, while her positive rating dropped by five points to 44%. The vice president’s confrontational stance with the president has likely contributed to her declining approval ratings.

Other Political Figures

The survey also examined the images of other prominent political figures:

  • Patricia Bullrich, Minister of Security, has a 52% positive rating and a 47% negative rating.
  • Luis Caputo, Minister of Economy, maintains a 47% positive rating, but his negative rating has dipped below 50%.
  • Axel Kicillof, Opposition Governor of Buenos Aires Province, has a 38% positive rating and a 61% negative rating.
  • Mauricio Macri, former president, has a 37% positive rating and a 62% negative rating.
  • Juan Grabois, Social Leader, has a 35% positive rating and a 63% negative rating.
  • Cristina Kirchner, Leader of the PJ National Party, has a 34% positive rating and a 66% negative rating.
  • Sergio Massa, former Minister of Economy and presidential candidate, has a 28% positive rating and a 72% negative rating.

National Mood

When asked about Argentina’s current state compared to a year ago, 53% of respondents felt the country had improved, while 40% thought it had worsened. A majority of those who voted for the opposition in 2023 elections agreed that the country had improved under Milei’s leadership.

As the political landscape in Argentina continues to evolve, the opinions of its citizens will continue to shape the nation’s future. With a year under Milei’s presidency now complete, the upcoming months will be crucial in determining the trajectory of his administration and the country’s overall political climate.
