Mojokerto, Jan 4 (beritajatim.com) – The outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Mojokerto regency has left cattle traders grappling with a drastic drop in sales. The Mojokerto Agriculture Department (Disperta) is stepping in, conducting health checks on livestock at marketplaces like Pandanarum to quell the spread.
The health checks at Pandanarum aren’t limited to examining the livestock; they also include distributing medication, vitamins, and educational resources to traders and buyers. Despite these efforts, traders like Suyudi from Gresik regency are struggling. "Sales have plummeted. Usually, I’d sell around 15 cattle; now, it’s barely 5 or 2, and sometimes none at all," he says, as the effects of the FMD outbreak are felt.
Suyudi’s cattle have tested positive for the disease, but he insists he’s administered treatment before selling them. He’s also received vitamin B complexes and dewormers from the Petugas Penyuluh Pertanian (PPL) at the Pandanarum Livestock Market.
Before the FMD outbreak, Suyudi could make around IDR 4-5 million in profits from selling 15 cattle. Now, he’s barely breaking even.
The FMD situation in Mojokerto is grim, with the number of infected cattle rising rapidly. As of now, 275 cases have been reported, with 16 cattle deaths, nine emergency cullings, and nine recoveries. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
