U.S. to Face Billion-Dollar Consequences if Russia Emerges Victorious in Ukraine: AEI Report
A recent report by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a think tank known for its hawkish defense views, suggests that a Russian victory in Ukraine could dramatically increase U.S. defense spending by over $800 billion by 2029. The report, cited by Bloomberg, underscores the strategic and financial implications of the ongoing conflict for the United States.
According to the AEI analysis, a successful completion of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, as defined by the report, would reshape European dynamics and pose threats to NATO members. To deter and, if necessary, repel non-nuclear attacks from Russia beyond Ukraine, the U.S. would need to invest an additional $808 billion, adjusting the current five-year Department of Defense plan from $4.4 trillion to $5.2 trillion – a yearly increase of approximately $165 billion.
"This would significantly impact U.S. positions in the Asia-Pacific region," the report’s authors noted. However, they emphasized that supporting Ukraine is financially beneficial for the U.S. in the long run. "In the long term, the short-term costs of helping Ukraine defend itself are much cheaper than the long-term costs of allowing Russia to win," AEI analysts stressed.
The report highlights the critical intersection of geopolitical conflicts and U.S. fiscal policy, as the fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war could reverberate through American budgets for years to come.
