CD Projekt Red announced a free remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, featuring 30 upgrades, mod integration, and new accessibility options ahead of its September 29 release.
Players preparing to return to The Continent will find a significantly less punishing journey when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered arrives as a free update on September 29. Unveiled as a surprise during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the remaster brings a sweeping suite of technical improvements, quality-of-life adjustments, and official mod integration that touches nearly every corner of the role-playing game.
New Accessibility Toggles and Gameplay Friction Reductions
Developer CD Projekt Red is overhauling how players experience the open world by introducing a dedicated ‘Accessibility’ tab in the main menu. According to ongoing livestreams from the studio, these settings are built to remove much of the game’s friction while giving players the ability to ignore some of The Witcher 3’s more tedious mechanics. Each setting can be toggled on and off individually so you can customise the experience to your liking, and enabling these options won’t stop you from earning Trophies.
The newly revealed options include a Vitality Regeneration Boost that lets you freely adjust how much health Geralt regenerates and how quickly it happens. Other toggles introduce Infinite Breath when underwater, traversing poisonous gas, or in an area with smoke, alongside Unlimited Item Durability and Unlimited Boat Durability. Players can also bypass inventory management by choosing to Ignore Items’ Weight and enabling Auto Loot Corpses.
HalkHogan Collaboration and the Integration of the HD Reworked Project
Following a path established during the 2022 next-gen update, CD Projekt Red has once again partnered with community modders to elevate the game’s core visuals. Modder HalkHogan, creator of The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, clarified questions and confirmed their cooperation with CDPR on the remaster.
It's been a while since the last news and I would like to clarify any questions and confirm that I am cooperating with CDPR on the Witcher 3 Remaster,
modder HalkHogan wrote in a post stuck to the mod’s page. “My work will be officially available in the game on September 29th (on PC and consoles), HDRP will no longer be needed. Almost all in-game characters, monsters, animals, vegetation, armors and equipment for Geralt & Roach and a large part of the environment have been reworked and I’ve put a lot of effort into ensuring the highest quality.”

HalkHogan previously worked with the studio on the next-gen update to spruce up textures and models. Back then, they weren’t the only modder who got the call from CDPR, with four others who’d put out HD revamps or key bug fixes—Denroth, Teiji25, Chuckcash, and Terg500—also being drafted in. While bug fixes were integrated into the next-gen update and haven’t evolved since, the rolling of HalkHogan’s work directly into the remaster cuts out the need to grab a mod for PC users and is arguably bigger news for console players who only get a taste of it when official updates drop.
With the 2022 next-gen update, CD Projekt Red stated they reimbursed modders whose work was featured and added them to the game’s credits, and something similar is presumably happening this time around. However, the remaster’s launch could be rough out of the gates from a wider modding perspective; much like updates to Fallout 4 and Skyrim, mods that rely on scripting or edited bits of the game will almost certainly need their own updates to work as intended with the new version.
Thirty Trailer Upgrades and the Songs of the Past Expansion
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered was the big surprise at Gamescom Opening Night Live, with CD Projekt Red bringing a shotgun blast of upgrades to all players in a free update coming September 29. The headliners include updated combat, enhanced visuals, and polished movement, but the reveal trailer also crammed in a staggering 30 improvements.

The teased list of additions and upgrades in the trailer’s “and more” section includes cross-platform mod support, new accessibility features, Xbox Play Anywhere support, Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive features, and rendering parallelization. Graphical bells and whistles like path tracing can be swept under the upgraded visuals umbrella, alongside new quest tracking, UI improvements, looting rework, and menu navigation.
The upcoming release arrives alongside next year’s Songs of the Past expansion, which includes a nod to CD Projekt Red’s original 2007 RPG and its source books as Geralt wields a new silver chain.
