Thomas Piketty proposes single international currency to replace US dollar

Economist Thomas Piketty has proposed a fundamental overhaul of the global financial system, including the creation of a single international currency to replace the U.S. dollar, according to a report from the World Inequality Lab.

The Global Justice Project

The proposals are detailed in the “Global Justice Project,” a report produced by the World Inequality Lab, an international research center based at the Paris School of Economics. The center is dedicated to studying global inequalities. In addition to the replacement of the dollar with a unique international currency, the project suggests reducing working hours by more than half and leveling per capita income.

Piketty describes the current era as one filled with “dystopias,” specifically citing a “trumpist vision of the future” promoted by techno-nationalists and techno-millionaires. He claims this vision fails to solve environmental and development problems, noting that these figures promote “crazy visions of the future”—such as placing data centers on Mars or anywhere on Earth—while continuing wars to extract fossil fuels.

Shift Toward a Multipolar Order

Despite these challenges, the author of “Capital in the Twenty-First Century,” published in 2013, maintains an optimistic outlook. He believes the world will move toward a multipolar order driven by the pressure of the global south and the weight of democratic forces.

This perspective follows a warning Piketty issued five years ago, in which he compared current levels of wealth accumulation by a privileged elite to the conditions that preceded the French Revolution in the late 18th century. He noted that such imbalances can trigger political crises that change history. While he admits the situation has worsened in many ways, he believes social struggles and democratic forces will eventually transform institutions to create a more equal world.

Requirements for Shared Development

Piketty states that achieving shared development on a finite planet depends on several conditions, including:

  • A transformation of the energy system.
  • Structural changes in production models.
  • A reduction in global inequality to enable investments in health access, education, and climate.

Regarding the proposed currency, Piketty envisions a system where no single country holds hegemony over the global GDP. He suggests an international currency based on a basket of currencies from nations such as Brazil, India, China, and the United States, or any country contributing to climate investments and development financing. He also argues that resources should be distributed more fairly, based on a country’s population or the climate damage it suffers.

Political Outlook

Piketty noted that the techno-capitalist agenda may not endure, pointing to the upcoming presidential elections in Brazil and the U.S. midterm elections in November as key events. He believes the techno-nationalist agenda will not keep its promises.

The response to these proposed structural changes is still uncertain.
