Headline: PSP Lisbon Amid Protests
”>Operation CACAIS Nets Major Arrests and Weapons; linked to Deadly Lisbon Riots
In the initial assessment of Operation CACAIS, Subintendente Bruno Pereira, of the Amadora Police Division Command, revealed that the PSP is open to making more arrests, having obtained "determinative" evidence. Four out of the eight suspects targeted by the operation are believed to be connected to the recent unrest.
The PSP seized a trove of evidence, including clothing, two pistols, a revolver, and ammunition, which are considered "vital" for ensuring those responsible for these crimes are held accountable.
The operation, conducted this Thursday morning, aimed to execute 12 search and seizure warrants at private residences. It involved around 100 PSP agents from various divisions and departments in the Lisbon Metropolitan Command. The goal was to gather evidence for several criminal investigations, six of which pertain to the riots that erupted in October.
The chaos was sparked by the fatal shooting of Odair Moniz, a Cape Verdean resident of the Bairro do Zambujal in the Amadora. Moniz was killed in the early hours of October 21 when he was shot by a PSP agent in the Bairro da Cova da Moura.
The ongoing investigations focus on offenses such as throwing objects (including incendiary devices), arson, damage, unrest, drug trafficking, threats, criminal coercion, firearm possession, and damage to police vehicles.
