Russians Lash Out with Three Armies in Failed Pokrovsk Assault; Ukraine Stands Ground
In a desperate attempt to breach Ukrainian defenses, Russian military forces have thrown three armies against the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. Despite their significant numerical advantage, the Russians are struggling to make meaningful progress, suffering substantial losses in the process.
Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled over 60 Russian assaults in the Pokrovsk area alone, according to Victor Treгубов, spokesperson for the "Hortitsia" operational strategic group. The enemy, consists of the 2nd, 41st, and 51st armies, all part of the Russian central military district – appears to be throwing everything they have into the fight, desperate to make headway.
Russian tactics in the region involve avoiding direct frontal assaults on the city, instead attempting to penetrate Ukrainian defenses from the flanks. However, these maneuvers have not escaped the Ukrainians’ counterefforts, with the city’s defenders displaying immense courage and resilience in repelling the enemy’s advances.
Last night, Ukrainian forces claimed the lives of 261 Russian invaders, with 133 being killed outright. Additionally, a Russian communication vehicle was destroyed. Although the enemy continues to probe Pokrovsk’s outskirts, intense fighting has yet to reach the city itself.
Russia’s objective is clear – to push as far as possible from Pokrovsk’s peripheries and encircle the city by penetrating Ukraine’s defenses on its left and right flanks. Treгубов emphasized the harsh nature of the engagements, with Russians hoping to force a Ukrainian retreat and consequently avoid a direct storming of the city.
OBOZ.UA previously reported that Russian troops have been gradually advancing westward and southward from Pokrovsk. However, it remains unclear whether these gains can be leveraged to encapsulate the city. Some analysts suggest that rather than seize strategic urban centers, Russia aims to bolster its territorial claims.
