Tønsberg, Norway — Residents of Tønsberg awoke to find the city’s main roads and thoroughfares cleared of snow, thanks to a overnight effort by municipal crews. "We ran our snowplows all night without stopping, keeping our bus routes and major arteries open," says Eirunn Haugstad, working leader in the technical operations department.
Snow clearing operations began around 2 AM, with crews employing snow plows in strategic locations across the city, including Hogsnes, Vear, Sem, Eik, Barkåker, and Re. As the snowfall tapered off around 6 AM, workers began their shift in the city center.
Despite the early morning snowfall, Haugstad reports no significant issues. "There were many people out last night, so we thought it best to wait before starting in the city center," she says. Now, all roads, pedestrian paths, and cycling lanes are being cleared.
Operations are ongoing, with nearly all available crews on duty. However, crews are waiting until the snowfall stops this evening before clearing school grounds, kindergartens, and parking lots.
Severe Weather Conditions Expected to Persist
Meteorologists at Yr.no predict the snowfall will continue until between 6 PM and 9 PM tonight. Residents are advised to heed updates and follow weather guidance.
Potential Ice Tonight
Tonight may bring icy conditions, warns Haugstad. "We’ll monitor the situation, but with current forecasts, black ice is possible, especially on hills," she says. Despite the potential hazards, few vehicles have been reported on the roads.
In the city center, parked cars pose a challenge to snow clearing efforts but have not significantly slowed progress so far, according to Haugstad.

Trafikkoperatør Sofie Knudsen at the traffic control center reports no issues related to snowfall. "It’s been very quiet, and E18 is completely clear," she says. Neither the police nor traffic control has reported any incidents on the roads.
