JAKARTA, KOMPASTV — The Indonesian Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) has responded to reports of alleged sexual harassment by its ambassador to Nigeria, Usra Hendra Harahap. The ministry is treating these allegations seriously and continues to investigate and address them according to existing legal provisions.
Roy Soemirat, spokesperson for Kemlu, emphasized that the ministry is taking the allegations seriously. "Kemlu responds to these allegations seriously and consistently provides psychological support to the alleged victim," said Roy, as quoted from Kompas.com on Tuesday (31/12/2024).
The ministry also ensures open communication with all relevant parties to obtain comprehensive information about the facts of the case. Kemlu reaffirms its commitment to upholding the highest ethical and professional standards, and does not tolerate any behavior contrary to diplomatic ethics.
Previously, the ambassador was reported by a former embassy staff to several authoritative bodies with allegations of sexual harassment and unfair retaliation. The allegations surfaced in a petition submitted by the victim’s legal team, entitled "Request for Immediate Intervention in Cases of Sexual Harassment, Intimidation, and Illegal Termination of Employment."
The alleged incident took place on February 7, 2024, when the victim was working at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Abuja, Nigeria. Usra was accused of unwanted and inappropriate physical conduct, resulting in significant psychological trauma to the victim, who later returned to Jakarta for counseling.
Kemlu has consistently taken a strong stance against sexual harassment in its diplomatic missions abroad and continues to monitor the situation closely. The ministry also urges all parties to remain vigilant and report any such incidents promptly and thoroughly, ensuring the safety and security of all its diplomatic staff.
