Headline: Violent Attacks Skyrocket in Ciudad Juárez and Guadalupe y Calvo
In the early hours of January 2, a disturbing crime shook Ciudad Juárez as two young lives were tragically cut short. Denisse Castañeda Nevárez, 17, and Ángel Alanís, 21, were gunned down while seated in a vehicle on the streets of Isla Célebes and Azcapotzalco, in the Plutarco Elías Calles neighborhood. Both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Teresa Almada Mireles, director of the Centro de Asesoría y Promoción Juvenil, A.C., condemned the act, stating that Denisse was pregnant, and expressed profound sorrow at their loss. "I cannot accept that these young people who were part of our high school, full of dreams for their baby, have been murdered," she stated. Almada questioned the authorities’ response to the escalating violence, noting that Ciudad Juárez had already registered 13 homicides in the first three days of 2025.
The violence in Ciudad Juárez is not confined to the city limits. The municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo has also been struck by a series of brazen attacks involving drones armed with explosives targeting members of the Base de Operaciones Interinstitucionales (BOI). Although no injuries were reported, a unit of the Guardia Nacional was damaged in the attacks.
To cap off a violent year, three individuals were executed and hung from the welcome arch to Guadalupe y Calvo. The victims were identified as Javier Ángel González Chaparro, 42, Bonifacio Ruiz Almanza, 32, and Ángel Torres, 19, all linked to notorious criminal organizations, La Línea and the Nuevo Cártel de Juárez.
These violent incidents are attributed to the territorial dispute between the Sinaloa and Juárez cartels, forcing countless families to flee their homes. In response, the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) launched a preventive operation in several communities in Guadalupe y Calvo, including El Pinito, Baluarte, Rancho en Medio, and La Matanza, in an effort to protect local residents.
As the border region grapples with an alarming surge in violence, authorities must redouble their efforts to guarantee the safety and security of its citizens. The community, meanwhile, mourns the loss of life and demands justice for the victims and their families.
