An 18-year-old man was shot and injured Sunday evening in Baltimore County, prompting a campuswide shelter-in-place alert at Towson University that was lifted at 10 p.m., according to local police and university officials.
Baltimore County police responded to a reported shooting at approximately 7:30 p.m. on September 27 in the 8000 block of York Road, according to local authorities. Officers arriving at the scene discovered the victim near Campus Drive. Emergency responders transported the 18-year-old man to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, police reported.
University officials and law enforcement quickly clarified that the injured man is not a student at Towson University. While the violence unfolded near campus boundaries, investigators emphasized that the incident had no direct connection to the institution. We do not believe that this shooting is related to anything in reference to Towson University,
Detective Trae Corbin of the Baltimore County Police Department stated during a press conference on Sunday night.
Campus Shelter-in-Place Order and Emergency Response
The shooting triggered an immediate emergency response from university public safety and county law enforcement. Towson Public Safety issued an initial alert to the campus community at 7:20 p.m., reporting a shooting at 8013 York Road. Shortly before 8:30 p.m., the administration distributed an email notice specifying that the active investigation centered on the Cardiff Hall Apartments, alongside secondary police activity near Osler Drive related to the case.
The campuswide safety alert warned students and staff that the situation was active, instructing everyone to lock doors, close windows, and stay indoors. The alert explicitly stated, This is not a drill,
while urging community members to report anything unusual and await further directions from local authorities.
Authorities lifted the shelter-in-place directive at approximately 10 p.m., allowing normal campus activities to resume.
Police Investigation at York Road and Search for Suspects
Law enforcement officers maintained a heavy presence in the area throughout the evening as they searched for suspects and secured the surrounding blocks. Officers cleared an apartment unit within the 8000 block of York Road to verify that no suspects remained inside. Investigators detained an unspecified number of individuals from the unit, but police confirmed that the primary suspect has not yet been apprehended.
Police have not yet determined whether the injured man and the suspect or suspects were known to each other. To reassure the surrounding community, investigators announced plans to bolster patrols in the immediate vicinity. We will deploy resources and multiple units in the area to increase the police presence around the area,
Corbin said during the Sunday press briefing.
