Chaos Erupts in Tongelre on New Year’s Night; Residents Shocked by Powerful Explosions
In the Tongelre district of Tilburg, New Year’s Eve turned into a scene of devastation as explosions rocked the neighborhood, leaving a trail of broken traffic signs, blown-up manhole covers, and shattered glass. Residents likened the chaos to a war zone, with explosions strong enough to shatter windows and leave locals shaken.
"It was like a war out there," a resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted. "I’ve always been okay with fireworks, but this was next level. I’m just grateful no one got hurt."
The aftermath reveals a shocking display of the night’s events. Broken traffic signs and litter bins lie scattered on the streets, while chunks of glass mark the spots where fireworks struck. One apartment building on Jan van de Capellelaan bore the brunt of the destruction, with multiple windows blasted out. A crater where a powerful firework had once been remains as a stark reminder of the night’s chaos.
Danny, another resident, described the scene as "heavy fireworks" reverberating through the entire neighborhood. "It wasn’t just audible; you could feel the explosions," he recalled.
In the apartment building, Didier was one of the unlucky residents who witnessed the destruction firsthand. Awakened by a deafening blast, he found shattered glass strewn across his apartment. "I called the police, but without a suspect, there wasn’t much they could do," he said, expressing his frustration. Despite the annually recurring nuisance, this year’s events took an alarming turn. "Adults were involved this time, not just kids," Didier noted. "It’s dangerous and disrespectful."
One resident barely escaped injury as glass rained down upon him in the building’s stairwell. Though shaken, he walked away unharmed, to the relief of his father.
Across the neighborhood, a transformers box was also targeted, leaving it smoldering and dangerous. Enexis Netbeheer is currently disconnecting the damaged box to prevent further hazards. "It’s outrageous," commented a nearby resident. "We’re just a few meters away, and our houses were shaking. It’s thoughtless and disrespectful."
The couple, out for a walk with their dog, lamented the lack of respect for the firework ban. "It’s frightening, and that transformer box is dangerous. What’s wrong with people?" They echoed the sentiments of many, hoping for a change in the community’s mindset.
