TORONTO — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday after nearly a decade in power, stepping down amidst growing dissatisfaction with his leadership and increasing unrest within his government, which was laid bare by the abrupt departure of his Minister of Finance.

Trudeau, the latest in a string of leaders forced out due to increasing voter discontent worldwide, acknowledged that he could not lead the party into the next election due to internal divisions. He plans to remain as Prime Minister until a new Liberal Party leader is elected.

"I don’t give up on fights, especially important ones for our party and country. But I’m doing this because the interests of Canadians and the wellbeing of our democracy are my top priority," said Trudeau, who appeared emotional as he made the announcement outside his official residence. He announced that Parliament’s activities, due to resume on January 27, will be suspended until March 24, providing time for a leadership contest within the Liberal Party.

Trudeau, 53, is the son of one of Canada’s most famous Prime Ministers, and initially heir to a Liberal Party resurgent in voters’ eyes. But the younger Trudeau’s popularity has waned in recent years due to a series of issues, including soaring food and housing costs, and increasing immigration.

Opposition leaders, including Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, welcomed Trudeau’s resignation, but criticized the Liberal Party’s role in Canada’s current state. "Canadians desperate to turn the page on this dark chapter may feel relieved," Poilievre said, "But what has really changed?"

The Liberal Party’s President, Sachit Mehra, expressed gratitude towards Trudeau for "transformative progress" like $10-a-day childcare, dental care, and a national climate plan. Mehra plans to call a meeting this week to begin selecting Trudeau’s successor.

Trudeau’s resignation comes amidst international challenges for Canada. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian products if Canada doesn’t halt what Trump claims is a flow of migrants and drugs into the U.S. Canada is a major exporter of oil and gas to the U.S., and also supplies steel, aluminum, and cars. Despite pressure, Trudeau has remained silent in recent weeks.

Trudeau’s tenure has been marked by controversies and unpopular policies, including a bailout of a troubled pipeline project and restrictions on unvaccinated people during the COVID-19 pandemic. His handling of Indigenous issues and the SNC-Lavalin scandal also damaged his reputation.

Trudeau first entered politics in 2008, becoming Canada’s second-youngest Prime Minister in history in 2015. Known for a charismatic personality and progressive policies, he has also faced criticism for not delivering on campaign promises and a lack of economic growth.

Trudeau is an ex-teacher, nightclub bouncer, and snowboarding instructor, married to former model and TV presenter Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. They have three children.

The Liberal Party is expected to elect an interim leader who will serve until a permanent successor is chosen through a leadership contest, likely in the coming months. The next general election is scheduled for 2025.
