Trump Administration Paid SpaceX $1.2 Million for Starlink Services

The Trump administration has paid nearly $1.2 million in federal contracts to SpaceX for Starlink services at the White House, despite earlier claims that the technology was donated by the company. Federal contracting records show four separate awards issued to the firm between March 2025 and June 2026.

Pentagon Contracts for White House Communications

The payments, funneled through the Pentagon, support the White House Communications Agency. This military unit is tasked with maintaining secure communications systems for the president, vice president, and other senior executive officials.

While administration officials stated last year that the Starlink service was a “gift” vetted by the White House Counsel’s Office, the subsequent contracts reveal a different financial arrangement. According to records identified by the Democracy Defenders Fund and The Washington Post, the government finalized three payments totaling $502,000, followed by a fourth contract worth $686,000. It remains unclear whether these deals relate to the services originally described as a gift or if they involve expanded operations.

Security and Procurement Scrutiny

Communications staff reported that the installation occurred without prior notice to the officials responsible for existing secure systems, and users noted a network labeled “Starlink Guestappearing on mobile devices. At the time, then-White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated the work was intended toimprove Wi-Fi connectivity on the complex.”

The transition from a reported donation to a series of federal contracts has prompted questions regarding procurement policy. One concern raised is whether the government has created a situation where only one source is considered responsible because accepting free services initially made it too painful operationally and economically to unwind the company’s involvement.

Concerns Over Transactional Arrangements

The Democracy Defenders Fund has raised concerns regarding the potential for conflicts of interest.

The scrutiny comes as Elon Musk’s companies continue to receive significant federal attention. In the 17 months since Musk left his role leading DOGE, reports indicate his companies have secured at least $10 billion in new government contracts. Democrats have signaled plans for a multi-committee investigation into the dealings between Musk’s firms and the federal government as they prepare to take control of Congress.
