Coming President Trump Aims to Pause TikTok Ban Law

Outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking a stay on the TikTok ban law that President Joe Biden signed recently. The law, set to take effect on January 19, mandates that TikTok must divest from its Chinese owner, Bytedance, to avoid being banned in the U.S. The basis for this measure is the perceived national security threat posed by the app.

In a recent filing, Trump argued that he should be given time after his inauguration on January 20 to find a political solution to the TikTok conflict and prevent the app’s shutdown for American users. Bloomberg reports that while Trump previously supported a TikTok ban, he has since expressed more favorable views on the platform, acknowledging its help in appealing to young voters during his campaign.

TikTok sued the U.S. government in May following the implementation of the new law, but the case did not fare well. The company subsequently appealed the decision to the Supreme Court in Washington. U.S. authorities maintain that TikTok enables China to spy on users and collect their data, while TikTok contends that the law is actually about censorship rather than security.
