Headline: Trump Could Make History as First Leader to Visit Ukraine by Plane Since Conflict Began
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump could become the first leader to visit Ukraine by plane since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. This symbolic gesture could mark a significant milestone in the country’s recovery.
Since the outset of the war, all Ukrainian airports have been closed to civilian and other flights, with only military aircraft operating for the defense of the country. However, there’s growing optimism about the resumption of air travel.
In late 2024, Ukraine mapped out a plan for reopening its airspace under martial law. Later, in November 2025, insurance providers estimated that the country might open its first airport in Lviv. This could potentially be the first airport to resume international flights since the conflict began in 2022.
