Incoming U.S. President Trump Eyes Arctic, Again; Norway’s Støre: "Let’s Dialogue"

Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has his eyes set on the Arctic, raising eyebrows in Norway and beyond. Trump’s latest musings on redrawing the global map have included expressing interest in both Greenland and Canada, suggesting they could be part of the United States.

When pressed on the topic at the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions’ (NHO) annual conference, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre responded, "Greenland has a significant degree of self-government, which Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has underscored. This determines how Greenland will evolve in the future." Støre advised dialogue, stating, "We should get used to a new communication style from the U.S. president and respond politely and properly. I believe both Danes and Greenlanders are capable of this."

Meanwhile, Trump Jr. made a "private visit" to Greenland, while his father clarified that he wouldn’t use military or economic force to secure U.S. control over Greenland and the Panama Canal. Canada has responded sharply to Trump’s comments.

While discussing the Arctic, questions regarding Svalbard‘s security arose. Støre assured, "Svalbard is part of Norway and will remain so. The Svalbard Treaty of February 9, 1920, recognizes Norwegian sovereignty, and the Svalbard Act of 1925 made the archipelago a full part of the Kingdom of Norway."

Trump’s potential new world map has sparked discussion, but Støre maintains, "We must take everything seriously and respond seriously, which is what we do."

Despite not being invited to Trump’s inauguration, Støre hasn’t ruled out attending, stating, "It might happen, but I haven’t received an invitation yet. I have other plans for January 20."

As the Arctic continues to draw global attention, Norway and other nations watch and wait, ready to engage in dialogue and protect their interests.
