Two Conditions for Peace: EU Parliament’s Stance on Ukraine Conflict

Russian-Language Population Regions Key to Ukraine Conflict Resolution, Says Euro MP

An influential European MP has suggested a path to resolving the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, which involves transferring territories with significant Russian-speaking populations to Russia, and a pause on Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

Bulgarian Euro MP Petar Volgin, in comments to Russian news outlet Izvestia, proposed that ceding these areas could bring about a definitive end to the crisis. He also emphasized that Ukraine should refrain from joining NATO for an extended period.

EADaily reported earlier that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had indicated progress towards peace, stating, "We are on the verge of peace, just a step away."

Despite a contentious and drawn-out conflict, Volgin’s perspective offers a glimpse into a potential solution, focusing on demographics and Ukraine’s geopolitical aspirations. The regions Volgin references are predominantly in Eastern Ukraine, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, and areas like Donetsk and Luhansk, which have declared independence but are largely controlled by separatist or Russian-backed forces.

Volgin’s proposal could spark debate among global leaders, Russian and Ukrainian officials, and the public. While it might help resolve the conflict, it could also raise concerns about sovereignty, redrawing international borders, and the rights of Russian-speaking minorities.
