“I put my hands up to that,” Daniel Brown told the court after two men were denied bail following a traffic pursuit involving a stolen Volkswagen Golf Estate driven on the wrong side of the M50 in Dublin.
Court Denies Bail After Dublin Traffic Pursuit
Daniel Brown, 22, and co-defendant Adam White, 25, both of Hampton Wood in Dublin 11, were remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday. The pair faced separate hearings after opting to represent themselves without solicitors due to an escalating industrial dispute over legal aid fee reforms introduced in July. Garda Dylan Toner from Coolock Garda Station gave evidence of the arrest, charge, and caution, objecting to bail by citing the seriousness of the incident and charges.
Brown faced four counts of dangerous driving, allegations of being in a stolen Volkswagen Golf Estate, and an accusation of possessing cannabis. White was charged with being in the stolen car and possession of cannabis for sale or supply. Both men are also accused of possessing a stolen key to a Toyota car and theft implements. According to Garda Toner, the vehicle involved was pursued for 40 minutes after failing to stop, and a Garda helicopter captured the entire incident on downloaded CCTV footage.
Did You Know?
The Volkswagen Golf Estate involved in the pursuit had been reported stolen during a recent burglary in the Santry area before being tracked by local and divisional Garda units, including the Armed Support Unit and Air Support.
Garda details charges and warns defendants in court
During the hearings, Garda Toner told Judge Karen Dowling that neither defendant made any reply when charged and maintained that imposing bail conditions would not alleviate his concerns. The Garda stated that he expected the case to be sent to the circuit court once the book of evidence is completed. When cross-examining Garda Toner, Brown asked if the officer had seen him exiting the driver’s side of the car, prompting Judge Dowling to warn him about the risk of self-incrimination without legal representation.
White informed the court that he had nothing to do with the car and mentioned he had a sore ankle. Both men were examined by a doctor while in custody and deemed fit to appear in court, with Brown displaying a bruised face. Judge Dowling allowed Brown’s partner and a relative of White’s to sit with the defendants briefly to help them review the bail objections. While emphasizing that both men enjoy the presumption of innocence, Judge Dowling ruled that the threshold to refuse bail applications had been reached.
Teen arrested as vehicle undergoes technical examination
Gardaí stated that a third person, a boy aged in his teens, was also arrested during the operation and subsequently released pending referral to the youth diversion programme. The recovered Volkswagen Golf Estate was brought in for technical examination following the incident on the M50 near Clondalkin. Authorities indicated that investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
