Title: US Approves Possible Sale of GBU-39B Bombs to Boost Morocco‘s F-16 Fleet

The US State Department has given the green light for a potential sale of a significant batch of GBU-39B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) to equip Morocco’s F-16 fleet, marking a significant upgrade for the North African nation’s air force. This decision was announced via a notification to the US Congress by the Department of State, alongside a similar approval for the provision of AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles.

The proposed sale, totaling 500 GBU-39B bombs, would be valued at approximately $86 million and involve Boeing Corporation as the principal contractor. This acquisition aligns with Morocco’s ongoing effort to modernize its air force, which includes the Future F-16 Block 72 aircraft and a Viper upgrade package for its existing F-16 Block 52+ fleet.

The integration of these advanced bombs will enable Morocco’s F-16s to engage a wider range of targets with increased precision and effectiveness. The GBU-39B, weighing 250 pounds (113 kg), can be guided by GPS, inertial, or laser systems, offering target engagement beyond 60 nautical miles.

"The proposed sale of these bombs will improve Morocco’s capability to deter and defend against current and future threats," said a State Department spokesperson. "This capability also strengthens combined operations and interoperability with the US Air Force and enhances Morocco’s role as a stable partner in the region."

This move underscores the growing strategic partnership between the US and Morocco, as both nations cooperate to maintain regional stability and counter shared security challenges.
